שערי תשובה

בספר שערי תשובה ישנם ארבעה שערים:

השער הראשון מכיל מעין הקדמה קצרה (העוסקת במעלת התשובה ובחובה להזדרז ולשוב מיד מהחטא), ולאחר מכן סוקר בהרחבה את חלקי התשובה. מסיים באזכור עשרים וארבעה דברים המעכבים את התשובה. בשער זה - חמישים ושתים פסקאות.
השער השני עוסק בששת הדרכים המעוררות את האדם לשוב אל ה', במשך שלושים וארבע פסקאות.
השער השלישי, הארוך שבשערים (למעלה ממאתיים ושלושים פסקאות), מהווה כמין חיבור עצמאי, בו מבאר המחבר את חומרת המצוות והאזהרות שבתורה, וחילוקי העונשים, תוך שהוא מחלק אותן לעשר מדרגות, וזאת "מפני שהוזהר בעל התשובה לחפש דרכיו"‏, מעורר אותו המחבר ומסייע לו להיוודע לכל חטאיו, להבין את חומרתם, ועל ידי כך ייכנע לבבו וישוב אל ה'.
השער הרביעי עוסק בחילוקי הכפרה במשך עשרים ושתים פסקאות.
במהלך הספר שערי תשובה מצויים יסודות רבים בענייני עבודת ה' ומצוותיו ובעניינים נוספים, שאינם שייכים ישירות לתשובה, וזאת הן בשער השלישי (בו מרחיב המחבר על עוונות שונים, גדרם ונזקם לנפש האדם) והן בשער חלקי הספר, וזאת משום שהמחבר נוטה, לעיתים קרובות, מהנושא המסוים אותו התכוון לבאר ומרחיב ביסודות הקרובים לעניין או בביאור פסוק שהביא ללמוד ממנו יסוד מסוים, אך בפסוק (או בפסוקים הסמוכים) מופיעים יסודות רוחניים חשובים הנצרכים להבנת הפסוק.

רבנו יונה מזכיר בשערי תשובה שערים נוספים: שער התורה, שער העבודה, שערי יראת חטא‏, שערי הענווה‏, שער השִנאה, שער האכזריות‏ שער גדרי הזהירות‏ועוד‏. ניתן לשער שחיבורים אלו היוו חלקים מחיבור גדול של המחבר בנוגע לעניינים רבים בתורה, מוסר, מצוות ועבודת ה', שרק שריד ממנו מצוי בידינו. בעשורים האחרונים התגלה – ויצא לאור‏ ספר נוסף של המחבר, רבנו יונה: שערי עבודה.

The first gate contains a brief introduction (which deals with virtue and duty to answer to hurry and go straight back to sin), and then covered extensively in the parts of the answer. Twenty-ending mention four things that hinder the answer. This gate - Fifty-two paragraphs.
The second deals with the six ways that raise the person to return to the Lord, for thirty-four paragraphs.
