About Japanese Kana by Hand

Kana by Hand teaches you how to write Japanese hiragana and katakana by hand. You draw the characters on the screen and Kana by Hand will judge if they are correct or not. Writing is the best possible way to learn, since it makes you active in the learning process.

If you already know hiragana and katakana, don't miss Kanji by Hand. It works the same way but comes with all the kanji you'll ever need. It's a perfect way to continue when you're done with Kana by Hand.

Advanced writing tutor

Kana by Hand is smart and tells you when you make mistakes. When reviewing your results, you can click on the answer to see the stroke order animated. You'll be quizzed on the basic characters and words which illustrate their use.

Full hiragana and katakana alphabets

Kana by Hand will teach you how to write hiragana and katakana. It also includes around 250 basic Japanese words that show how the different characters combine to form words.

Spaced repetition for maximum retention

Kana by Hand uses spaced repetition to make it easy for you to learn and remember. Easy stuff is repeated more seldom, and the hard things come back more often. For the best effect, try to do your reviews every day.

Sync your devices

If you have both a tablet and a phone, you can set the same account name on them to get your progress data synced automatically. It also works as a backup of your data in case anything happens to your phone. That's why you need to accept some permissions to install it, so it can access the network and sync your device.

On your device, just go to Settings -> Accounts & sync -> Kana by Hand -> Account Settings and change the account name so it's the same on all your devices.

What are users saying about Japanese Kana by Hand

Y70%
by Y####:

This app is actually one of the best for learning kana. But along with the kana it forces you to learn a ton of words, without giving you any context or mnemonic way to remember them. (So it's pretty much impossible. ) I'd rather learn the kana first and my vocabulary later. If it had an option to disable the words, it would get 5 stars from me.

L70%
by L####:

I am confused about the katakana part. I've been doing this for a few months and I've yet to see a singe katakana character. Am I missing something?

J70%
by J####:

Great app overall but recognition needs to be improved. 'E' is not getting recognised no matter what. This keeps people from progressing. Please fix it.

Y70%
by Y####:

Flaky recognition. I see my answer almost twinning the template, but still says "wrong".

Y70%
by Y####:

I have been using this app for a few days and it makes learning the kana and some vocab very easy. I wish it had the ability to erase learned characters so you can start over from scratch, but it is amazing =)

Y70%
by Y####:

Hi/bi/pi are very hard to get right. So are ne, re, snd ro. Other than that it's perfect; especially how often it quizzes you on which kana.

N70%
by N####:

It revises and revises and revises and....you get the idea. It tries to make sure you remember all that you've learn and if you practice daily, you tend to remember fairly well. Still only 20-30% through hiragana though.

M70%
by M####:

Very strict in style. Also, repeats the words very frequently, which is annoying.

Y70%
by Y####:

This works perfectly on my Optimus V. I will definitely buy the kanji version after I finish this. Many thanks to the author.

Y70%
by Y####:

It won't really teach its just saying your wrong or right. Its not helping you nor teaching you. UNINSTALLING!!!!!!!

K70%
by K####:

I love this app! The handwriting recognition is a little hard sometimes but that only helps you to really get the characters right. A thing that irritates me is that you have to review lots of words and kana before you get to practice new ones.

P70%
by P####:

This helped me a lot when needing a beginner refresh! Poor recognition of certain characters is super irritating, though. えmust be fixed. It always gives me a problem!! One can form it perfectly and get it marked wrong. Then, sometimes doing a terrible job of it, it is recognized as correct!

Error message (Cant Install this stuff (500))

I didn't like it that much because it does not have to be so nice of handwriting. But it"s OK...

M70%
by M####:

Just finished it today, but I've been recommending it for over a year. I'll be buying Kanji By Hand ASAP. Great job!

Z70%
by Z####:

I was already able to read kana but kept confusing some of them. The hand recognition works real good, even my handwriting is very lousy.

T70%
by T####:

Too sensitive, displays error too often. Other than that, very good for learning stroke order and also many useful words.

T70%
by T####:

It does a great job by making you write the characters and words, and the recap modules are great. It can be nitpicky at times, expecially with the え, but having a couple of words asked again isn't really that bad, it's just more excercice.

U70%
by U####:

Only frustration is how it doesn't always recognize how a character is written (i.e. the character So or Zo) Otherwise it's an excellent app for learning with!

U70%
by U####:

Worked better on my Note 2... but on the Note 4 doesn't work as well. Because of the unknown and unconfigurable recognition system you can easily get stuck with no idea why and no way to progress. I have ended up focussing more on satisfying the program than actually learning Japanese. The developer seems to be no longer developing this or at least their pages seems to have stagnated and the Email I sent has had no reply. So I reduce my score even further.

U70%
by U####:

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Straightforward good app. However, I'd like to manually mark characters for review if I want to.

U70%
by U####:

This app is great for learning and most importantly remembering the kana. It is also amazing because it uses the kana in words and helps you learn those as well.

U70%
by U####:

Lol I thought Japanese words were easy to write but it's harder than I thought. :)

N70%
by N####:

The concept is good, but it keeps saying me the character I write are wrong, even when they are exactly as his ones... frustraiting. E hiragana is impossible to write right, for exemple!

C70%
by C####:

Update: still too manu words before new characters. I just had to learn 43 (!!) words before I got a new character "nu". I just want to learn all the hiragana then work on katakana! Wish I could turn off words. It's still an awesome app for learning the characters, but will I ever get to learn the last one?? I've had this over a year now.

T70%
by T####:

Many people have mentioned the difficulty with recognition, but my biggest frustration is different. I want to practice tracing the stroke order with my stylus or finger to get a feel for writing it, but every time you touch the image the animation restarts, making that almost impossible. Please give us some option for veiwing a static image too. Otherwise this is an almost perfect app.

U70%
by U####:

Needs to be debugged - check answer page doesn't show correct results - sometimes what you see as your entry is from the previous round (either previous correct or incorrect entry)

R70%
by R####:

This app is great. I have used it for a few months and made a lot of progress. It does all the planning for you so you just go right into the learning. One thing that was unclear was that you can tap on a wrong character to see correct stroke order.

U70%
by U####:

What? You got something better to do?

U70%
by U####:

Se and Ze are always counted as wrong no matter how perfect I write them.

G70%
by G####:

Its very useful. Teaches words along with the kana you learn. It is one of my favorite apps.

U70%
by U####:

Awesome app for learning to read and write Japanese, and extend your vocabuary too.

U70%
by U####:

It's more useful in actually teaching kana and vocabulary than a lot of other apps.. I think that they should probably loosen up with their standards for the strokes.. there is such a thing as penmanship difference... But overall, I recommend it.

U70%
by U####:

This app has helped me learn hiragana in a very short amount of time. Highly reccommended for those who want to learn in their spare time. Just fully completed everything and now I'm stuck only being able to practice st the mercy of the app. Please allow unlimited usage!

U70%
by U####:

I'm a beginner at learning Japanese and I love the simplicity of this app. I also like how it quizzes you until you get it right enough times!

J70%
by J####:

Some characters need to be drawn carefully and in the property stroke order but once you figure out the little nuances it's really addicting. Other than that it's pretty simple and straightforward.

U70%
by U####:

It won't tell u how to do it

P70%
by P####:

Needs a practice mode with selected words though, some of the words I just want to revise and get used writing

W70%
by W####:

its a nice app but can't u make one for katakana and kanji cuz i still can't read japanese Thanks for teaching me .. That was awsome
