About Bullion Test Free

This app offers a cheap and easy to use method to help detect fake bullion coins, by examining their resonance frequencies.

The resonance frequencies of an object are determined by the objects shape and material. If the shape and weight of a silver coin is correct, but the material is not actually silver, then a resonance test could detect this.
This is also known as a "ring test" or "ping test".

Unlike the manual "ring test", this app does not require that the user knows exactly how each coin should sound. The app will also detect resonance frequencies above the range of human hearing.

This youtube video shows how to use this app:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pZnqp3bl3A

This free version supports three types of coins. Buy the full version to get support for many more coins.

How to use this app:
1. for best results you should perform this test in a reasonably silent room. Some electronic devices may produce high-pitch noises which could interfere with the test.
2. Select the type of bullion coin to test from the drop-down list. Currently only three types of coins are supported.
3. Press the microphone button to start the test.
4. Blue lines indicate the expected resonance frequencies of the selected coin.
5. Balance the coin on your finger, near the microphone of your smartphone. Tap the coin using your fingernail, or use some hard object. Do NOT use a second coin to tap the first one, since the sound from the second coin may affect the results. The sound level required depends on the sensitivity of the microphone in your Android device. For most devices is it sufficient to gently tap the coin with your fingernail.
6a. If the sound matches the expected resonance frequencies of the selected coin, you will see a green check-mark.
6b. If there is too much noise, or if the sound does not match the expected frequencies, then you will se a red cross.
6c. Some Android devices have microphones which are unable to record high frequencies above ~10kHz. If the app detects two out of three expected frequencies, it will indicate this with the fraction "2/3", and report that device limitations might be the reason why the last frequency was not detected.
7. Some practice may be needed to produce a clean enough sound from the coin. The app is sound-activated, you can tap the coin again to do another test.

Needed permissions:
Record audio - To record the sound of the coin.
Storage - Necessary to enable "sharing" of test results.

It does what it says. But to upgrade I'd like to see a few more coins supported. Morgan's, Peace, and maybe generic by diameter

Good concept. I would like the paid version, but $3.09 is too steep! The app is simple enough to duplicate (and improve), your high price is inviting competition. I'm a buyer at $0.99... maybe a $1.99 - but doubtful for me.

Tested an eagle...got a positive. Tried it on a known fake...got a positive. Made me unsure, so I inspected the coin with a 20x loupe and it had small red rust spots. I did a simple rub test and with acid confirmed there was no silver content in the coin. I suspect this app may be created with the intent to make it easier for counterfeiters to pass their fake bullion by finding dealers that use the app.

Great app..Seems to work well..With all the fakes out nowadays the more tests available the better...Need some popular bars...

Well worth the money. I bought a silver panda 2013 and had some doubt about it. I did all the tests and not until i used this app, was I satisfied.

I have not yet had the pleasure of securing a gold piece to try, but I have confidence judging by it's performance.

Limited usability. Please add silver Britannias, Libertads, & pre-1933 U.S. gold coins. Will buy app then.

Very cool idea, I was able to quickly test some of my latest local coin store purchases. I will upgrade to the pro version, definitely worth the money. Thanks for this gem of an app.

It would be very useful to have other common gold coins like double dollars, buffaloes, etc...great app though! Also, how about an option to capture the frequencies of a known legitimate coin, save it and use it as a reference for testing others?

Tested on both ASE and 1oz buffalos, very consistent in identifying coins & precise enough to distinguish between any coin. I tried about 10 different coin types & each one had a unique frequency response. I feel confident it could identify well made counterfeits.

Using a FFT by converting a short sound recording to a frequency domain, it can check resonances and compare to 'known' sounds for silver/gold. This is awesome, just needs more medallions and coins to be added. Possibly the option to add your own sounds. Id like to see Canadian maples, Philharmonics and some common generic medallions like Silvertowne and Sunshine mint. If you write down the frequencies for other ones, you can still use this app and just compare the outputs.

I tested this using my Samsung Galaxy Stellar phone using an ASE and the app identified it flawlessly 3 times in a row. The secret is to put it in your thumb as demo'd in the video and flick the coin. Great app.
