About Glycemic Index

Glycemic Index (GI)

The glycemic index or GI ranks carbohydrates according to their effect on blood glucose levels. The lower the GI, the slower the rise in blood glucose levels will be when the food is consumed. The effect may differ from person to person.

It is recommended that people with diabetes have moderate amounts of carbohydrate and include high fibre foods that also have a low GI (not all high fibre foods have a low GI).

Some research has shown that by eating a diet with a lower GI, people with diabetes can reduce their average blood glucose levels. This is important in reducing the risk of developing diabetes-related complications.

GI numbers are to be used as a guide only as individual foods do not have the same response in all people with diabetes.

Low GI foods are foods with a GI less than 55.
Intermediate GI foods are foods with a GI between 55 and 70.
High GI foods are foods with a GI greater than 70.

The recommendation is to eat more low and intermediate GI foods, not to exclude high GI foods.

The GI is only a small part of the healthy eating plan for people with diabetes.

It has some drawbacks. The search algorithm is based on the name + the GI number so I can get all items that are have a GI of 15 and that has 15 in the name part of the pair. However there is no reverse search for GI indexes or ranges of indexes it would be better than having to go through the whole list to find a food. Other than that, I like it. At least it worked when I downloaded it where as the first one I tried did not properly start.

Ideal for someone who is simply looking for a quick index for common foods. Some data appear to be inaccurate, however.

Useful and doesn't require net. However some data are really inaccurate and more data are definitely needed

E70%

The database is not comprehensive enough. Searches have to be too precise or they come up empty. No brand or restaurant data. Keep going though! I do love the simplicity.

X70%

No frills, just a fast searchable database. Works great.

Simple foods not found on this index, like some vegetables: yet brand name products more available.

Thanks to the developers for sharing this application. I was wondering why an exact same item has multiple entries with different values. e.g. "Kidney beans: 43" and "Kidney beans: 23". There are so many items like that.

T70%
by T####:

List could be half the lenght if repeats and misspelled words were removed. Gi numbers are different on repeated items, so you dont know which one is correct. Overall not bad, but needs improvement.

H70%
by H####:

The same item may be listed three times with different values. Not a reliable program.

Please include GL in future updates! It is a much more useful number.

You can't tell what the glycemic value is when there are so many duplicate foods with different values. I can see a couple but thus list needs to be fact checked and edited. It would take a couple of hours to do. I appreciate someone tying to gather this important information for us diabetics.

Some groceries repeat on the list, and GI is not the same so you cant tell wgich one is right.

H70%

Simple & efficient app. Does what it said. But please put the ads at the bottom and make a paid version ad free. Thanks! For the one who don't know anything about glycemic index: no 100 is not a maximum, it is the reference and is based on glucose. And it's true that some aliments have higher GI. Also giving the glycemic load would have no sense because it depends on the quantity your are eating...

T70%
by T####:

You can't tell if the data is accurate as for some the same food is listed multiple times with different GI values, eg. pineapple has a couple of very different values as do the different types of rice. For someone just starting out on a low GI diet this is confusing. Uninstalling to find a more accurate source.

T70%
by T####:

Would be FAB 5 stars if I could search by food group!? Use it, don't use it...

T70%

Index rates sucrose at 100. Some foods do have an index higher than sucrose.

foods are listed multiple times under different gi values. installed straight away

T70%
