Fretboard Hero for Android
Great app for learning the fretboard! It tests you both by showing you a note and having you find it on the fretboard and by showing you a fretted string and asking you what note it is. It's not without flaws, though. As you play, the timer gets shorter to force you to speed up, but that's also the only time it introduces notes higher up the fretboard, so you never get a chance to learn those notes at a relaxed pace. (I just realized you can change this behavior in the options, and start the game using notes all over the fretboard. Awesome!) Also the inclusion of flats and a left handed mode would be great. Still an awesome learning tool, though.
Best fretboard app I've used. What seems like a very clever algorithm combined with intuitive controls has seen me make great progress using this app. I was surprised at how much unlocking guitars with high scores kept me coming back and stopped the boredom and frustration that I previously thought was synonymous with these fretboard apps. The Reaction Times add-on is well worth the small fee to get it; I've found the insight it gives into where to concentrate on invaluable. The only thing I would add is the option to practice flats instead of just sharps, but overall a great app. Well worth a download.
Why no flats? Flip the script on me and let me move back up the neck via flats rather then just down the neck via sharps. Also, custome tunings is kind of a bummer. Just let me set each strings pitch individually rather then having preset tunings! I want to learn the neck in Eb! Both directions.
I've only have had it for a day, but use it when I can't practice. It's genuinely fun, the UI is nice-looking and intuitive. I have really enjoyed this app so far. I would definitely recommend giving it a shot no matter what skill level you are. P.S. I agree with other reviews about using flat spellings on randomly chosen questions. During those questions you could just change the same accidental input buttons and change the spelling, so you wouldn't have to put more buttons on the screen (ei; A# to Bb, etc.). This is really the only thing I'd change about the app.
This is by far the best fretboard app I've found! I've taken away one star because I bought the full version hoping it would have Eb standard tuning but it doesn't. Sadly the variety of alternate tunings is pretty limited. If they added Eb (and maybe a few other common tunings like Drop C) I wouldn't be able to fault it.
HOLY FU**ING S**T!! Dude I've been trying to learn by ear for a long time now and I have been working with sheet music. Whoever the master behind this app is omg you are a legend. I've downloaded at least 8 ear trainers and gave up. A month later I ran across this in my recommended. Thank you so much!
Great app. Not perfect but better than others I have looked at. If you are serious about learning the fretboard this will do it for you. I tried every fretboard trainer/learner I could find on Google play and this one is getting the job done fast. Give it a week and you will see how much you have memorized in just that short of time.
The only fretboard app worth paying for. It's very user friendly. And very effective! I've used it for a few days and already have the fretboard very close to mastered! I would suggest to the developer to allowed for some customization in terms of choosing what part of the fretboard or even single strings to focus on that way we can get the repetition needed in weaker areas. The screen rotation needs to be fixed as well as allowing the use of flats in addition to sharps.
Excellent trainer. Forced landscape mode occasionally causes issues w other apps. Good adaptive learning, repeat slow responses is excellent. Could use ability to not always start from fret one. Ability to set a region would be good. Very satisfied. No crashes. Stable.
Sounds like a really cool and useful app but I can't even get into it. Every time I open the app I get the message "unfortunately Fretboard Hero has stopped". Hope you can fix this, thanks.
Limited in usage, and pretty frustrating "gameplay," but I can't deny the results. (I play on Expert Mode, unlockable after 40 points, starts with all 1-12 frets available). I used another Fretboard Learn app that allows me to focus on any fret and string range, but after a short time with Fretboard Hero, I'm both much more confident with the full board, and cut my reaction time significantly. I'll stick with both, but this is addictive, frustrating, but effective. Can't access reaction times offline.
I love this because its the only fretboard learning app ive used that plays like a real game. Its fun, colorful, challenging and the new guitars give you a reason to keep playing, but a bass mode would be great so I could sometimes learn more quickly without having to bother with strings I dont even have
Very good app, thanks a lot!! I'd LOVE to see some enhancement like more or less strings (i play bass and would like to train my 5string Skills!) and even better would be interval training! Totally recommend the app and definitively 5stars if some improvement happens!
The fact this app is timed is a great feature that really carves the frets into your memory. Great addition to my app arsensal
Good learning tool. Having fun trying to beat my highest score. Needs the option to be able to turn off the sharps and do whole notes only
Nice app but options to focus on certain strings or sections of the Fretboard would be nice.
I'm a music student who works full time and can't always practice when I need to. This app keeps me accurate when I'm visualising music.
Please add interval training
No flats and no 12-24 frets
Very cool, personally would love an option for more unlockables and 7 string w/ tunings! Still, as is is awesome! Great work!
This has really helped me a lot
Always starts from open position. Full of ads.
Great. You still could improve the IU design to make it look amazing
Excellent app, expertly made. Actually helpful. Purchased full version
No Left-hand mode really?
It is upside down!!!!!
Works well!
Can I give this app 6*s? Very helpful!
Very cool app! I can't believe I have finally memorized most of the fretboard (up to 8th fret) and it's been just 2 days. Great fun to learn the notes with this thing. I'd suggest fixing the screen rotation tho. Edit. I've mastered the 12 frets but I'd suggest allowing the user to start from any fret to master the whole thing. Otherwise it's too difficult to get beyond the 8th fret..
The timer not being allowed to be disabled is a hinderance. It is slow when starting out on easy notes near the nut but then gets fast when moving up the neck. When you are learning this does not work well. An option to turn it off would be welcomed.
This is a great app except, like the original SMB, you have to start at the same point every time. So after you have mastered the first few frets you still have to play through them over and over and over to drill yourself on the frets you are still working on. Its like having to start at world 1-1 EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU DIE.
Couldn't really play it as there is no left handed view of the fretboard. A minority market of course, but that doesn't help me.
It really is. Needs more easier options. Works well with other more forgiving apps. 3.7654321/5
I love this because its the onky fretboard learning app ive used that plays like a real game. Its fun, colorful, challenging and the new guitars give you a reason to keep playing, but a bass mode would be great so I could sometimes learn more quickly without having to bother with strings I dont even have
Rejects my hardware, unlike the more than 400 apps I have installed that have no problem with it.
A few more options would be necessary - adjust the timer, select range of frets.
Excellent, please add an interval training :)
Very good but too many propaganda.
A surefire 4 or 5 if the app rotated properly with the device.

I've tried every fretboard app, and this is the only one I've paid for. The controls are all easy to find. It starts simple and increases at a reasonable pace — and also has expert mode so experienced players can jump right in to the notes they need. There are two ways to find notes which keeps it from getting boring. I feel like I've learned the fretboard better in just 15 minutes. And the "reaction time" heatmap is a huge bonus. The only thing I would change is: give us flats too. Don't change the positions, just the note names.
