放浪詩人. 본명 김 병연(金 炳淵)
본관 안동. 字는 성심(性深), 號는 난고(蘭皐)로 일명 '김 삿갓'

조선후기 1807년 경기도 양주에서 양반가문인 김안근의 3남 중 차남으로 出生.
5세 때에 조부 김 익순(金 益淳)이 1811년 동북부에 있는 함흥지방 홍경래란 당시 선천부사로 있다가 농민군에게 항복한 죄로 참형을 당하고 폐족의 집안이 됐다.

김 병연이 20세 되던 해인 1827년 영월 동헌에서 열린 백일장에서 조부 김 익순(金 益淳)의 행적을 모르고 있던 그는 조부 김 익순(金 益淳)의 죄상을 비난하는 글을 지어 장원급제후 집에 돌아와 어머니로부터 숨겨왔던 집안내력을 듣고서 역적 자손이라는 것과 조부비판시를 지어 상을 탄 자신 죄 스스로 용서할 수 가 없어 곧 22세 때 출가한 후 삿갓을 쓰고 전국을 유랑하며 다니다가 57세 때에 전라도 동복(同福)에서 객사한 것을
現 강원도 영월군 하동면 와석리에다 그의 아들 익균이 김 삿갓 山所 모시다.

그에 대한 기록은 ≪대동기문 大東奇聞≫, ≪대동시선 大東詩選≫, ≪조야시선 朝野詩選≫에 단편적으로 남아있다.
김 병연 ; 김 삿갓은 평생 자신의 신분을 숨기고 방랑하며 살았기 때문에 그의 작품 또한 각지에 흩어져 전하였다.
1930년대에 이 응수(李 應洙)에 의해 흩어져 있던 김 삿갓의 시가 수집되어 ≪김립시집≫(1941)이 나오기에 이르렀다.

김 삿갓의 詩는 과시(科詩)와 희작시(戱作詩)로 특히 유명한데 한자어 파자(破字), 동음이어, 한자를 우리말 훈, 음, 운(韻), 언문풍월(諺文風月) 등이 있다.
한시가 김 삿갓에 의해 유희와 풍자의 수단이 되어버린 사실은 문학사적으로 심중한 民衆詩文學的 의의가 있는 것이다
흔히 김 삿갓은 방랑과 풍류의 해학시인으로 알려져 있으며
그의 작품에는 현실과의 갈등, 깊은 자의식, 현실에 대한 풍자, 민중에 대한 다소간의 관심 등이 每작품 드러나 있어 그의 漢文學 詩世界가 단순치 않음을 알 수 있다.
