Otra Vuelta de Tuerca

Una muchacha es contratada por un extraño caballero para que cuide de sus sobrinos en una mansión victoriana que, por sí misma, representa todo un misterio para quien quiera que tenga algo de imaginación, pudiendo incluso enfrenarse a los fantasmas que la habitan.
Junto con el ama de llaves, la joven institutriz intenta proteger a los niños de visitantes que tanto ella como el lector deben desentrañar a través de las ambiguas pistas que el genial Henry James nos va ofreciendo paso a paso, escena a escena.
Publicada en 1898 como ‘The Turn of the Screw’, con ‘Otra vuelta de tuerca’ James (Nueva York, 15 de abril de 1843 / Londres, 28 de febrero de 1916) buscó dar un giro a las tradicionales historias de horror y fantasma populares en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, lo que logró sobradamente.
De hecho, ‘Otra vuelta de tuerca’ representa un antes y un después en el género, ya que su historia se presta a múltiples lecturas por el modo ambivalente en que fue concebida y escrita por James.
En sus primeros escritos, el autor manifiesta la influencia de la cultura europea, como en las escritas entre 1875 y 1881: 'Roderick Hudson' (1876), 'El americano' (1877), 'Daisy Miller' (1879) y 'Retrato de una dama' (1881), esta última una de sus obras maestras en la que analiza a los norteamericanos expatriados en Europa.
La narrativa de Henry James se caracteriza por el ritmo pausado y la descripción sutil de los personajes más que por los propios acontecimientos; sus tramas, aunque no suelen ser complicadas en extremo, cobran densidad por los repliegues de la estructura y el estilo indirecto, como ocurre en 'Los papeles de Aspern' (1888) y en 'Otra vuelta de tuerca', que es para muchos su obra suprema. Along with the housekeeper, governess tries to protect young children from visitors that she and the reader must unravel through ambiguous clues that the great Henry James is offering us step by step, scene by scene.
