Kenya Drug Price

With devolution, it is expected that counties will take up more roles in procurement of pharmaceuticals health commodities. Without adequate information, procurement may fall subject to economic gaming resulting in inefficiencies and higher costs passed onto the citizens.

As a measure to prevent this, procurement should be supported by transparent drug pricing. A reference pricing system for medicines would go a long way in preventing excessive pricing of select commodities especially in the private sector supply chain since the public sector also draws supplies from the private sector drug manufacturers and distributors.

As part of the effort to formulate a drug pricing policy, a drug price reference guide has been developed and disseminated widely to all public procurement agencies. The guide shall be based on the Kenya Essential Medicines List (KEML).
