About Beat the Microbead

More and more cosmetics contain microbeads, tiny plastic beads. These microplastics are a hazard to our environment.
It can be hard to determine if a product contains these microbeads. The North Sea Foundation (Stichting de Noordzee) and the Plastic Soup Foundation have developed an app to easily check if a product contains microbeads.
With this app you can check if a product contains microbeads by just scanning the barcode with your Android device camera.
This new version of the APP recognizes many more products and has localised product listings. New countries are continuously added, so chances are that your country is included or will be included soon. Beat the Micro Bead is now a truly worldwide campaign!

Empty database, can't find any products. would not recommend, even though the idea is great!

N70%
by N####:

Great idea for tracking the microbead products, please improve more

N70%
by N####:

Bar code scanning doesn't work well. Can't use flash or other default camera settings. Clockwise turning of the picture doesn't work. Not sure if you need the backside of the product or the Barcode since Barcode is quite important but not asked for when sending g in a new product.

L70%
by L####:

Couldn't get the scanner to work for bar codes. Product list seems to be lacking and category search doesn't include shaving gel. At least I can rest easy that my regular toothpaste is OK to still use.

N70%
by N####:

Thought it was a great idea, however I scanned 20 items and none of them were in the system. Seems super lacking.

N70%
by N####:

it was good when it actually worked but even aqua toothpaste was n't in the system !!! :(

N70%
by N####:

Scanner doesn't work

U70%
by U####:

No products scanned

N70%
by N####:

Cool idea but every item I scanned was not in the system.

Y70%
by Y####:

Tried scanning at least 30 products, most with some sort of beads and it recognized none! The concept is great, just doesn't work!

N70%
by N####:

This app is such a good idea, but they don't recognise ANY of my products. I legit scanned 10 items and it didn't know any of them. And it's not like they're unpopular items. Its stuff like body shop and dove, etc, that it doesnt recognize

K70%
by K####:

The barcode scanner has trouble recognizing barcodes of small size. A lot of products have such small barcodes. Apps like "Kemiluppen" by Forbrugerrådet Tænk have zero problem recognizing these small barcodes so maybe you should ask them how they do it.

The idea of the app is great and I'm happy I can use it in many countries... as I travel quite a lot. Some improvements would be useful. Like make a bigger scanner, make an option that one can add a barcode to a product in the database (so not to add the product, as it's there already, but add an additional barcode as some products seem to use various barcoded) and my android app stops very often when I try to add products and add pictures.

K70%
by K####:

Great concept but really buggy! It stops working constantly and the scanner has some issues.

K70%
by K####:

Scanner does nothing, very small database, may try again in future

K70%
by K####:

The scanner is really small and there's no difference in its reaction to a product it doesn't know and showing it like a table surface or something. I'd recommend a barcode scanner like on the myfitnesspal app. Also as has been mentioned there don't seem to be many items on the database, it could only identify one thing in my bathroom.

You have an option to update a product if it isn't available. You can take a front and back picture of the product. What I'm confused about is the question below "does this product contain microbeads?" and the option is just to switch a button from left to right. If you flip it, it will turn red. Please clarify if the red color means: Yes, it contains microbeads (so avoid it). Or No it doesn't contain beads

B70%
by B####:

Scanner is terrible as unable to give any info but the info button takes you to an alphabetical list of all products currently on database so it is easy to check a product you already have or are interested in buying. It is also possible to add products to the database. A good scanner would however be a vast improvement

D70%
by D####:

Every product scanned produced the message 'This product is still unknown.'. Useless!

K70%
by K####:

on Android the app doesn't control camera focus and exposure so it can't even scan a barcode. Hope there's an update soon!

K70%
by K####:

Scanned 10 products in our bathroom and every one came up as "unknown." All are mid to major brand products. Removing the app. Disappointed!

K70%
by K####:

Nothing will scan and cannot add

Z70%

It doesn't do anything

K70%

The scanning window could be larger.

K70%

Everyone needs this app.

K70%

Let people search for a product by name rather than just scan. Frustrating when all products I scanned weren't on it. When addìng a product how do I know if it has microbeads? This app is a great idea but needs a lot of work

I70%
by I####:

Great idea but crashes when I try to add any product photos, not many products scan. This can be fixed and this would be a great app.

K70%
by K####:

I like what they trying to do but definitely needs some updating.. I liked how you can submit new products but I have yet to see any of mine get posted, yet. I'm gonna keep though to see how it goes in future

K70%
by K####:

Allow the public to add products! Crowd involvement is key and you havent done that.

Thanks

Just seen it on current affair show. Installed, set region, scanned a dozen different items. Same response "this item is not know at this time". Sorry but now uninstalled. Great idea for environment conscious movement but way to early to release and advertise.

Frequently crashes and database of items is very incomplete. Crashes when trying to upload photos of items not in database. Had to take a photo outside of the app then load it into app. Needs lots of work.

An invaluable resource. App is a little laggy but overall works well. Thank you for this positive contribution to cleaning up our water resources.

B70%

Scanned everything of concern.... Recognised nothing...

U70%

Doesn't recognise any products! Not at all useful. If it worked I would use it.

W70%

Those who say that it doesn't work must work for said companies using this dangerous ingredient it's scanning for....

Y70%
by Y####:

I am using a nexus 6 Android 5.1.1. It crashes always, can't do anything.

C70%
by C####:

No products found. Adding products wants to know from me if they contain microbeads. How am I suppose to know?

K70%
by K####:

Every item i scanned had product not found. This app is useless
