NPR News for Android
Great content and smooth streaming. Notifications are buggy and non-expandable, though, and there's no play/pause button for streaming on the persistent notification. The design hasn't been updated in at least five years and it really shows - the screenshots on the Play Store are on Jelly Bean and they look just about identical to what we have today. Even if functionality doesn't change much, this app really needs to be modernized.
I like NPR, but my Pixel 2 XL runs on Android Oreo 8.0 and whenever an NPR breaking news alert appears on my notifications bar, its icon shows up as a blank white square. The NPR logo doesn't appear like it does for my NYT, AP, and Reuters breaking news alerts. I hope NPR's app developers are able to fix that.
Why is this app so bad? Relative to all other news outlets (CNN, BBC, etc.) this app looks like it belongs in 2008. Breaking news notifications are well behind others and communication with local NPR stations is weak at best. This app is practically useless and has been for quite some time.
This is a review of the app, not the product. Npr is the best in the news business. This app is pretty much broken in Oreo, and has had issues prior for months. It is clear that this is a depreciated app and all of the effort has gone into NPR one. Which is unfortunate, because this app allows playlist of programs specific articles. This is a feature they either haven't bothered to or refuse to implement in NPR one. EDIT: devs seem to have resolved outstanding issues.
This is not bias reporting Mr.Trump,,,This is the unvarnished truth as well as it can be reported today!!!! If the GOP doesnt like it they can impeach him and put someone in office who stands with the people who's job it is to report the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,,,so help them God!!!
Does not play audio from Morning Edition or All Things Considered on Android 7.1.1. It will play other podcasts (hourly news). The ability to play flagship broadcasts returns 12 hrs after local air time, or if listened to on another app.
I'm not rating npr here, I'm rating the app, and the app does not work with Oreo Android 8.0. Instead I've been going to their website work my browser and streaming episodes in desktop mode. Edit: They have fixed the issue.
I love NPR, but this apps radio isn't even close to functional. The app is very poorly made. Just while i was making breakfast (30 min) it cut out at least twenty times. I wouldn't give it such a low rating but it cuts out so frequently and for so long you miss 30% of the news! The developers seriously need to address this. It has been this way ever since I've first used the app and has recently gotten much much worse.
New release solves some annoying bugs, such as notifications not going away after reading the article. Love being able to listen to my local NPR station from anywhere.
Doesn't actually work with Android 8.0 (Nexus 5X). I get notifications, but no stories come up when I open the app. It just says "check network connection and try again".
Very useful but TERRIBLY unreliable. It cuts out on average every 5-15 minutes and tries to buffer, but it doesn't do any good. It'll come back on for a few more seconds and than buffer again indefinitely. I'm better off clicking the stop & restart button to grab a fresh feed. Nothing more frustrating than hearing a great story and having it cut out at the most captivating moments. Pros: Works (sort of) over WiFi and cellular data Easy to find stations by city or ZIP Can save stations to favorites for quick access Cons: Terribly unstable connectivity Cannot pause/rewind streamed content (unlike iTunes version) List of programs cannot be sorted A-Z Cannot download a program and listen in airplane mode
This app has improved greatly over the last four years, but it still can't be considered contemporary with respect to material design. It's a critical app to time shift daily news programs--hopefully it keeps getting attention and improvement.
Love NPR, hate this app. What can I say... it needs a complete rewrite. For one thing, it will not rotate to landscape. Very annoying.
Gave it only 4 starts because it took 4 months for the dev team to fix an issue where the app stopped playing programs on Android Oreo.
I love using this app when it works with all its features. However, the streaming feature is not working in the android Oreo OS. And it is my favorite feature! Woo-hoo, it's working like a charm again! The app has been fixed.
Every time I turn on my Bluetooth I get a message that my NPR app stopped working (in the background). Otherwise it's a great app.
Streaming with Oreo is finally fixed. But, the app goes into background when playing and the app isn't in the notification bar.
The app notification beep sound cannot be turned off (at least the settings could not be found after 10 min searching for it). Not a useful app for me, I cannot keep it unless it can be made silent.
NPR is mostly ok but the app, not so much. I rated it one star so hpefully the developers will take notice. I deleted the app because it will only view the long way on my tablet. Most people don't view things on their tablets that way, particularly because most tablet stands are oriented to display wide screen. I'm sure it's fine for phones on the go but I usually gather my news in the comfort of my home. If I'm out and about (call me old fashioned) I enjoy NPR on the radio. If you allow my device to rotate the page, I'll use your app again, otherwise I look up NPR online, the old fangled way.
Finally works for basic streaming of my local station. I hope the stability lasts. Nexus 6P on Android 8.1.0 Dev preview 2
Streaming audio now works on Android 8.0, but widget is still broken and app doesn't appear in notifications while running, like it used to. Please fix!!
Good app to read news but live streaming stations doesn't work beyond a few minutes. That needs fixed.
No ability to stream stations in pixel phone even after app update. Very disappointed.
So much better than the 'official' app. Thank you for fixing it to play on Android 8.0 Oreo. Good job.
While this is a pretty basic app, the content makes up for the lack of bells and whistles. After all, that's what we're here for. Love the depth of reporting.
They finally added a way to turn off push notifications, thank you...
Works with Android 8 / Oreo now. Great!
Works with Oreo now! 5 stars again!
Yay! Updated and it works again. Thanks, NPR!
Current version crashes regularly
Much better now that the notification is removed after it is opened.
It's refusing to update.
Streams constantly stop for no reason
Best app for downloading from off the web that I have found. Enjoy people.
Needs a landscape mode for my tablet
Gives you notifications you don't want
Good way to keep up with I guess real news.
Support public broadcasting
Unbiased mostly and clean news

NPR is a great source for news, and this app includes the flagship news programs (All Things Considered, Morning Edition) and several other talk shows, as well as access to specific local NPR stations. My only criticism of the app is that there is no way to access the playlist, so if you add something by accident or want to modify the list, there is no way to do that. If that were fixed, this would be a 5-star app!
