I'm pretty sure that there are a couple of dates in your life that you've been waiting to reach for a long time. For example, the day you start getting your pension, your birthday or maybe next Christmas. In this case the Progress Widget might help you to keep track of how many days you still have to wait. Just add this widget to your home screen, choose the date since when you've been waiting and the corresponding end date, and select an appropriate icon like a snowman or a birthday cake. As time goes by, the icon will move from the left side of the widget to the very right, depending on how many days you still have to wait.
If you like, you can choose a picture from your photo gallery to be used as the background for your widget.

This is the 2nd Progress widget I have tried, and certainly displayed better than the ProgressBars widget, that appears on Google Play as closely related. It is simple and allows a choice of icons, rather than a plain progress thermometer bar. I couldn't get a 2nd instance of it to appear, although the author assures me it is supposed to support multiple instances. Under JellyBean 4.2 only 1 widget size is offered, but once placed, it is RESIZABLE. A keeper app, as I am still using it, so 5 stars.
