About Haven: Keep Watch (BETA)

Haven is for people who need a way to protect their personal spaces and possessions without compromising their own privacy. It is an Android application that leverages on-device sensors to provide monitoring and protection of physical spaces. Haven turns any Android phone into a motion, sound, vibration and light detector, watching for unexpected guests and unwanted intruders. We designed Haven for investigative journalists, human rights defenders, and people at risk of forced disappearance to create a new kind of herd immunity. By combining the array of sensors found in any smartphone, with the world’s most secure communications technologies, like Signal and Tor, Haven prevents the worst kind of people from silencing citizens without getting caught in the act.

We are announcing Haven today, as an open-source project, along a public beta release of the app. We are looking for contributors who understand that physical security is as important as digital, and who have an understanding and compassion for the kind of threats faced by the users and communities we want to support. We also think it is really cool, cutting edge, and making use of encrypted messaging and onion routing in whole new ways. We believe Haven points the way to a more sophisticated approach to securing communication within networks of things and home automation system.

Project Team

Haven was developed through a collaboration between Freedom of the Press Foundation and Guardian Project.

Safety through Sensors

Haven only saves images and sound when triggered by motion or volume, and stores everything locally on the device. You can position the device’s camera to capture visible motion, or set your phone somewhere discreet to just listen for noises. Get secure notifications of intrusion events instantly and access the logs remotely or anytime later.

The follow sensors are monitored for a measurable change, and then recorded to an event log on the device:

* Accelerometer: phone’s motion and vibration
* Camera: motion in the phone’s visible surroundings from front or back camera
* Microphone: noises in the enviroment
* Light: change in light from ambient light sensor
* Power: detect device being unplugged or power loss

Great proof on concept but that's it at this moment. The configuration seems a bit complicated especially if you just want to get started. The image quality I got from some of my own instrusions was not very good and blurry. Audio was okay. It would be nice to record a few seconds of video instead of images. Also it would be nice to control it remotely by signal: take a foto or something. Thanks for your work.

T70%
by T####:

Recordings sound blank, are too easy to delete, and don't even play after a dozen or the accidental delete. Moreover it appeared that the backlight stayed on all night. I might have missed that setting in the most confusing configuration screen I've ever seen. Smart Recorder doesn't have these problems but lacks timestamps.

I've given Haven 4 stars because I love the idea of it and how it *should* work. I've set up Orbot and the Remote access feature, but Haven crashes every time about 2 seconds after the countdown finished and it'active. ("Nokia 2" phone. Android 7.1.1) It seemed to work fine until I enabled remote access.

Z70%
by Z####:

Works well. Interface improvements:1)Sound threshold slider is not smooth. How about a simple up down button. 2) Delay start timer selection (hours/minutes) is a clock (cannot set zero hours) Notifications: need options other than SMS for phones without SIM cards Stability: Playback sometimes crashes Conclusion: Keeping it and hoping for continued improvements. Thank you

I downloaded this after seeing it feature in the New Screensavers show on the TWiT network. Unfortunately despite the app being light weight and intuitive the notification functionality does not work. It fails to verify my phone number and I don't get messages. Good concept but this needs work. Right now it's pretty useless the me.

D70%
by D####:

Can't get the verification working, love the app idea. Not worried about the quality of the app camera and other recording issues. After receiving verification code on personal phone, monitoring phone will not take the code. Tried work arounds, but no go. Will give this 5 stars once issues are fixed!!

D70%
by D####:

It's slowly evolving. Slowly. Instructions are not intuitive, but improving. Notifications don't work for me. I'm presuming you need to be using Signal as default sms apps on both remote & local devices. It still doesn't work for me. Despite verification etc. The screen recordings/snapshots are too blurry (low light) to be of any real use in say a car for e.g. Will this die a slow death? Sure feels that way. Great idea though. Pity. Bump.

S70%
by S####:

Unable to register my number. Not receiving Verification code. And there are no alert receiving either on remote or local number.

D70%
by D####:

A good application, but on some smartphones crashes when minimized and does not work in standby mode when the mobile phone is blocked to quietly watch over the illegal penetration.

D70%
by D####:

Nope, it wants access to everything just like any other app you install.

Please allow sending notifications to email address.

True Story: I set up the app, leave my house for errands, when I returned I noticed 2 camera intrusions. Ah ha, I knew it, right? No not exactly. Only after telling 2 other people about my exposed intruder did it register that the intruder was in fact me. I didn't take into account the moment I picked up the phone to deactivate the app. In turn this app taught me a valuable life lesson; To take a look at myself before I begin to point at others. Who knew this was also a philosophical app?

O70%
by O####:

Great idea, terrible execution. Besides, apps that do this (but actually work) have been available for years. Running this app makes me feel, like my phone is broken. All the sensors seem to be sampling way too slowly. I don't know if that's an attempt to save battery, or what, but on my old phone which was almost 10x slower than the current one, I had apps like this, that worked smoothly.

D70%
by D####:

Definitely like the idea, but I don't know anyone that has a spare sim with cell service for an old device. It would be better to also have the option/ability to send a message through Wi-Fi to a simple client installed on your main device, which could also allow remote access directly or through TOR. Just a thought!

D70%
by D####:

The UI is still a little wonky. But since it's still in beta, it's a great start.

D70%
by D####:

Good idea, but would like an easier way to connect using my Google account to link two devices, with the ability to trigger the logging upon leaving the home, and any activity would be reported over data connection. With live video streaming supported too.

K70%
by K####:

When trying to verify phone the code required to enter contains a "-" the keyboard that appears on my HTC does not contain special characters or alpha. Therefore there is no way to enter code. Should remove special characters and go with just numbers

D70%
by D####:

Not getting sms alerts when motion etc. Is detected. Needs to sync to cloud service otherwise thief could take phone and you would still end up with no evidence.

G70%
by G####:

It's useless. I have to get another phone? There are cheaper alternatives. What I need the most, is to see if is anyone monitoring my phone. Come up with that and I will pay for the app.

D70%
by D####:

Sensor notifications are shown on the lock screen which defeats the purpose. Should be simple to fix.

D70%
by D####:

Apparently one disable all vibration notifications of all other apps AND ?set camera resolution to lowest setting *otherwise with 3 notifications via vibration it burned about 500MB of mobile data with just 1 episode...which cost me $5 *this is what I think happened, not sure if it will use the now lower cam res I have set or not... otherwise great idea

Not working on xiaomi redmi note 3. No inbuilt way to report bug else would've done that

If this app uses front cam, why not include screenshots? Kinda like 'personal' keylogger.
