About National Women's Hall of Fame
The National Women’s Hall of Fame was created in 1969 by the women and men of Seneca Falls, NY who believed that the contributions of American women deserved a permanent home in the small village where the fight for women’s rights began. The Hall is the nation’s oldest membership organization dedicated to recognizing the achievements of American women.
With its mission “Showcasing Great Women . . . Inspiring All!” the Hall is dedicated to enhancing the public’s understanding of American history and culture by telling the stories of women whose contributions changed the course of our nation’s history. By the end of 2015, 266 women will have been inducted into the Hall in the areas of arts, athletics, business, education, government, humanities, philanthropy and science.
The Hall maintains an exhibition gallery, an archive and research center, and an educational gift shop. Programs include Induction weekend, educational lectures and book events, as well as programs for students from K-12 through college. The Hall is currently housed in the Helen Mosher Barben Building in downtown Seneca Falls. The Hall owns the historic Seneca Knitting Mill located on the Cayuga-Seneca branch of the Erie Canal, across the canal from the Hall’s current location. During 2014, the Hall completed abatement on the Mill, stabilized the building and installed a new roof. The Hall will move into the rehabilitated Mill – transformed into the Center for Great Women – where artifacts will be displayed, and exhibits and educational resources will be made available to the public.
Each of the apps profiles a slice of the great women who have been inducted into the Hall. Showcasing Great Women profiles women from the social movements, business, and science. Showcasing Great Moms profiles great women who changed our nation’s history – who were also mothers. Inspiring Women profiles great women across the range of the eight fields of endeavor.
