Tuner - gStrings Free for Android
Well, when I first downloaded this app, it would be able to pick up the correct note I played. (I'm a trombonist btw). After awhile, it would register my Eb and Ab as naturals and no matter when I did, it would not change. This app was great when I first started....
I am using gstrings like 4 years now and recently i am not really able to tune my guitar, because it's not listening! I see the Hz goes up, but it does not show anything.. it's really fustrating.. I just think I have to say goodbye to Gstrings after using it for many years.. I really loved it.. but its not really working anymore. Goodbye i am gunna search for new tuners
The push to listen tuning option is unnecessary and confusing. Otherwise I think you're safe ignoring all of the silly 1 star reviews. This is, in my opinion, cleaner and more accurate than the original Gstring
I've tried several free tuner apps. This one is very easy to use and is very accurate. I had a slight problem with an older version with some kind of hardware conflict where it couldn't use the mic on my phone. I don't have the issue anymore. But if it ever does happen to you, resetting the phone usually works.
Used to work great on glxy s5. Does not properly sample on my new moto phone... needle just regisers the first strum and sits there as you tune, only to jump suddenly to reveal yoyve overshot the note. Unusable.
If I ain't broke, don't fix it. New version is horrible, won't play the notes I request I get A 880 whatever I ask for. Readout in hz but nothing to show nearest note. Really awful. Looking for replacement.
The new version stinks because it does not detect the pitch and the meter varies wildly if it does. The old version worked perfectly on my phone. Never had that problem with old version. After fighting with this tuner longer than necessary I am going to pick a new app for my tuning.
What happened to the use of colour? Why ruin a good thing? I will look for another app because I can't easily tune my guitar anymore. ( had this app for 5 years now, very sad). I am uninstalling after this comment.
No one needs to choose the instrument they're tuning; just fix the auto-tune so if I play a string it will tell me the note. You've ruined your creation. Please simplify it because none of the changes are necessary. And I can see a lot of people agree with me. Please fix it; I don't want to find a new tuning app.
Super convenient, really accurate. A little finicky with low frequencies, but that might say more about my phone's input than the app. If you're tuning a low string and it gets weird, use a harmonic. Good work, devs, thanks. I've never felt the need to try another tuner app.
After an update it became so slow it didn't work. You'd overshoot the note before the tuner caught up. Even after being patient, one chord strum shows something's terribly wrong
I use this regularly with the old version to tune my acoustic guitar and it worked great. Now I can't get it to tune properly. Tuning needle bounces all over the place. Please bring back the old version. 6/6/16 update. I finally figured out that waiting and using the last reading after the needle stops bouncing is an accurate way to tune my guitar. You should put that into the instructions.
It is exactly what it says: a tuner. The auto detect works great! Starts right up, I've never had any issues with this app. Period. Tunes my bass, my guitars, and my mandolins. Never has a problem picking up the sound, even in somewhat noisy rooms. Of all the tuners I have downloaded, this is possibly the best. No extra crap, no gimmicks. Just a nice, very functional tuner that you will not regret downloading. Good job, Dev.
Worked after a reboot to release microphone access to this app. Been using it on 2011 phone for years with almost no issues, now on 2017 tablet and phone works almost as well. Issues: need to be better able to "hear" my instrument (carryover problem from old version.) Also it needs to respond in real time. I sound a note and the needle takes about 1-2 seconds to catch up. That was not the case with the old version. Otherwise, this is a lightweight, easy to use, and very accurate tuner. Tried other tuner apps, but they're huge, don't work, and are primarily ad vehicles, not instrument tuners.
I am far from an accurately acclaimed savant for my ability to recognize pitch (those perfect bitches). So how precise the frequency recognition algorithm is beyond me. However my old tuner broke so this is free and cant be worse than tuning by ear right!
The only thing this updated pos can do is guitar, it doesn't recognize any of my 5 bass guitars, 4,5,6 strings nothing worked, I guess I have to lug my own tuner around again... it works fine for standard 6 string cheese guitars, not bass.
The previous version was good, but this is great. It's a twelve note tuning that doesn't make me choose an instrument, and I think it's more accurate than tuners that I've purchased... and constantly had to change the batteries on! FWIW I use it to tune a ukulele, and I repeat, I think it has the best tuning finesse I've come across yet.
I've used this app for years and loved it. The new update is, in my mind, unnecessary. The app won't recognise the strings I'm playing and you have to hold down the sound button to tune by ear. It all just seems like a counter-intuitive, unhelpful mess.
Hey I like this new version. This version minimizes the detection of surroundings' noise, therefore becomes easy to use. Plus you don't have to click anything just open the app and pluck the string to tune. I don't get those saying this new version is crap. Maybe they're having hard time using it. They don't know they don't have to click anything, just open the app and it is automatic.
Can we please add a chromatic concert tuning? I don't know how difficult that would be to add. Four star for awesomeness but a chromatic concert pitch option would be EVEN MORE AWESOME!! I'd five star after that given there were no glitches. Even if there were if it didn't hinder much I'd still five star.
Used to be amazing, now it's crap! It can barely detect the bottom e-string on a guitar. There is no way to change the sensitivity like before. So... The needle sits still for all my strings. Another example of fixing things that aren't broken and making them worse. Outdated code... For a tuner. What a load of bull.
New version is f **king awful, and the old version will not successfully re download as promised. You have to keep holding the button down for it to ring out a tuning tone? Are you kidding? You need BOTH HANDS to time a guitar.
This was always my favourite app. Used it all the time to tune my guitar. I even found it more accurate than my actual tuner. But since the new version came out, it never works properly. If I try and tune the guitar, it always recognises every string as a G note. Absolutely terrible! You all have ruined a perfectly good app!! Congratulations!!
This app used to be amazing. So simple to use and accurate and now it's all gone wrong. I just don't understand why they had to go and mess with a great, uncomplicated little app. So disappointed :(

This app used to be great. Now all it does is show A#, and if it does actually decide to show the right note, it is so unresponsive that it justice jumps back and forth between flat and sharp. This app sucks now. I had it for forever, but now I'm going to use something different.
Total redo of app makes it unusable. The needle just swings back and forth wildly. Not sure if it is lagging and then catching up, but I can't quickly tune my guitar anymore with this.
I hate myself for giving this a bad review, but you ruined the best guitar tuner app out there. I've been using it for 6 years on 4 different devices. Now the core of it - the actual tuner - sucks. Too slow, picks up more background noise than it used to. Sure, the UI changes are great, but nobody really cares if you can't tune a guitar. Revert to the old tuner engine. You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.
I normally troll the ratings as so many are clearly bought. However this one I'll give them the props they deserve. This is a great free tuner with minimally invasive ads. You can program the Hz range you want in case your an orchestra tuner or take Plato's advice against the 440hz tuning. I personally tune up a whole step. This thing does it all and does not throw an app tantrum when the hot mic is disabled. Great app.
Well, I don't know if it's my new phone or the app but it just outright doesn't work anymore. Set it to auto, pluck a string, nothing happens. Pluck repeatedly and more aggressively and it wiggles minutely but still ultimately does nothing. Same thing on manual. I used to use this a lot but I guess I'll just use this as an opportunity for some ear training.
Worked perfectly before update, but now failing to correctly identify tuning tones. I have a stand alone tuner as well as doing it by ear, but liked this app as I always have my phone with me. Now, I'm going to uninstall. :-(
The old app did the job perfectly, this new app however looks way better. Has clear demarcation for manual and automatic mode and the ad placement isn't intrusive at all. The only drawback is that it gets a little difficult to tune the guitar unless you shove the phone inside thee guitar. Hope you could fix that. Thanks a lot.
I don't understand why you'd completely change an app that already worked. Now it doesn't pick up my electric guitar OR my acoustic. It used to be great, now I'll have to look for a different one.
Can I roll back to the older version?? The needle lags now, it takes so long to read the pitch it's nearly useless to tune my guitar anymore. I was 100% happy with the old version, I used it every day, now it's all but useless. I'm use my old physical tuner again.

How disappointing, this used to be the go to for tuning anything and everything. Even the forks in my kitchen. Food never tasted so bright. Now I need a college degree just to get this to do anything resembling functional. While I appreciate the updated 'material design' so much of the simplicity of the old app has all but disappeared.
Perfect. I use it for both my guitar and cello (not a humble brag, I'm equally bad at both). The app does a really solid job knowing which note I'm aiming for, and I've checked it against two tuners my instructor uses, and this app is on point. Look no further. You've found that for what you were looking.
But seriously, can we get a new icon to go with the material update? Current icon was ugly 7 years ago; it's horrible now.
Used to use gstrings a lot, but it's just unusable for me now for some reason. It doesn't recognize me plucking strings like 90% of the time. It's just impossible to use right now.

I'm rarely inspired to rate an application, but upon starting the new version for the first time---it's so much smoother than before. The previous version was good as a tuner, with a little babysitting (e.g. choose intended note for stability). Immediately on startup, it defaults to display standard tuning (if I was still learning, great). Functionally, the display is simplified and made clear enough for glancing use. Also, no more jumping octaves. Thank you for saving a fortune in strings, from someone who never developed "the ear" properly. 9/10, just because I haven't tested bass, violin, and electric. Yet.
