About BirdTrack

The bird recording app designed for use by birders worldwide to help keep track of observations and targets. Visits can be recorded using a variety of species baselists making it useful both at home and abroad. Individual observations can be recorded on your device. Registered BirdTrack users can then verify and upload visits when convenient for analysis and comparison to other records. Registered users can record visits using the same set of locations on both the web and mobile devices giving a seamless home and fieldwork tool set.

Your BirdTrack data is used by the British Trust for Ornithology in one of the largest citizen science projects of its kind for on going scientific research and education.

To upload records users must have a BirdTrack account (free). Please visit the BirdTrack website (http://www.birdtrack.net) to register or use the register button in the App.

Not intuitive like last version. Default location was in the wrong place!! Couldn't check 2016 data, 2 days ago!!! Also wrong location logged. Why change? To search (check) data had to add United Kingdom every time. Clunky and loss of functionality.

O70%
by O####:

Just awful, compared to the old version. Recording a "casual" sighting was nice and simple on the old version, but a nightmare on this version. Don't like it at all, and rarely use it now.

K70%
by K####:

A lot better than I was expecting having read the other reviews. Rather slow to first load as it updates its data and on first use it asks you to remember your BTO username and password, but who can remember that, so had to find before moving on. Once you are in its very easy to switch off the twitter feed and most of the functions are obvious, though only thing I can't find is how to change position of an existing location which is not realy in correct location (suspect gps positioning is better than previous version). Shame not to see any comments back from the app developers to people's feedback.

K70%
by K####:

It gives you nothing back. Viewing local sightings, planning visits, this is really really disappointing. Looking forward to an update.New version is so disfunctional to the point of unusable.

B70%
by B####:

Don't like not being able to upload casuals so probably won't use it as much as the legacy version. Please bring back that facility.

K70%
by K####:

1st Version OK to use but the 2nd / New version of the app has no usability, terrible design :( Next version will require a lot more input/testing from the users

E70%
by E####:

The old app wasn't particularly intuitive, but this newer one is even worse, to the point where I now hardly bother trying to use it any more

X70%
by X####:

Really don't like the home page - I want to use it to record birds not see pictures in twitter, Turn off twitter feed and home screen tells me that bird track twitter feed is disabled. Can't see how to enter records - will write them down and enter them on the PC! Don't quite see the point of the app now - it used to work as a recording system.

K70%
by K####:

The only thing that appears to work on this is the Twitter feed! Can't add casuals?

N70%
by N####:

Can't access my saved locations to log sightings. Will revert to paper.

K70%
by K####:

At first I was not impressed with this but managed to find a couple of you tube videos which help a lot. Just search on birdtrack in youtube to find them ????

K70%
by K####:

Much less functional, a lot more clicks to get to logging records should get rid of the twitter feed home page. I want to log sightings thats all this app should do.

K70%
by K####:

Older App was better, new version is really not good at all.

Z70%
by Z####:

Not as good as the old app.

U70%

Much prefer the legacy version

This updated bird track app is brill I've been using it for years now and please keep the twitter feed it's a great touch good work bto :-) be nice if we could have an app made like this for the BTO garden birdwatchers :-)

by K####:

Please step back to the older app. Or at least give us options to save settings so we can customise the experience. Also when I do a search on All countries as opposed to Scotland my lists are different. I have never entered any data outside Scotland since starting to use Birdtrack and the list is smaller Worldwide than just Scotland. Also recent sightings etc. was something I used a lot. now it is gone. Will be going back to the legacy app :-)

by H####:

Until I just read other reviews, I thought it was me being thick. I cannot get into it at all. On the settings page, none of the blue buttons are active. So it's back to pencil and paper for me. Or until its fixed, I'll just input the odd casual record on my laptop. Dick on Android

K70%
by K####:

Lots of tiny buttons, which i can't easilly hit with my fingers; adding casuals is slow and painful; no features for searching for local species. Entering lists takes longer than with the previous version, though has proved a step forward when entering non-uk sightings. Still rely on my notebook as weather conditions often make it difficult to operate the phone in the field. Awaiting the next version.

F70%
by F####:

This version is much less convenient, more difficult to use. I have no interest in Twitter whatsoever, but which seems to have dominated the thinking behind this version. We used to have data on the screen, not a huge blank when Twitter is turned off. This version is certainly less useful and convenient, and I really don't feel I want to be bothered with it. Why bother contributing to the national database when it's been made difficult. I shall probably give up on it. Why can't I see recent records for instance?

Had a new phone and had to get the new version of this app after holding on to the older and more friendly user version for as long as I could. Not a fan of this upgrade to a point I've given up making site lists and only adding the more interesting species because of the difficulties using the upgrade. I'm about to go travelling overseas for a long period so maybe my thoughts may change then. But in the UK not a fan, sorry BTO.

K70%
by K####:

Frustrating app. Just want to record sighting of individual bird like you could on the old one with the Casual Observation feature. This worked well for me but have abandoned the new version consequently no more sightings from me. BTO's loss... that's progress.

K70%

A very Complex app despite few controls, no instructions and I only want to report certain birds to them, not to understand programming. Registration isn't mobile friendly either. Unfortunately I'm under the impression this app was rushed and not thought through carefully. Worst yet, despite carefully declining news letters and emails in the register for and unsubscribing for them that I never agreed to - I'm still getting such emails. Best either not to bother at all or mark it as spam! Doesn't encourage anyone to register and help conservation at all!!!

A fresher look than the old app but fed up of the twitter feed and it has very few of the functions of the old app. They say these functions will be released soon but why not get it working fully first. Not great

Y70%
by Y####:

I can see why it's useful for BTO but nothing left in the application for the user. Prob will uninstall.

Some improvements but I go along with comments on other reviews. Legacy version was easier to use and clearer display for use outside. Also this version uses around 50MB internal storage vs 1.5MB for the legacy version, and cannot be moved to run from SD card, a potential problem when close to the limit on internal storage.

No longer easy to enter casuals. Interface still doesnt allow easy selection of a square you are in that has been previously defined. Twitter feed annoying.

Have today 29/09/16 deleted the old Birdtrack App and downloaded the New version. My first impression is disappointment. I thought the previous version was absolutely fine, user friendly and uncomplicated. For me there was no need to change. I'm struggling with the new version to record a casual. Or is it simply only available to do this by calling it an incomplete list ? Lists on the new version appear easy enough to record and upload. In conclusion you'll have to learn a new way to do the same thing.

As a daily user of the app I was disappointed in losing many features of the old app. I don't see the point of the Twitter feed and maps. I like the +/- keys to adjust totals and the comments box for each list. Tested the app home and abroad and it works well. Functions from legacy I would love to see back are the large font, distance restrictions on locations and better target list functions helped by view of year and local hotspots so we know where species are seen. Blend the best of both apps please.

Shame that it's no longer possible to enter casuals. I hope this feature will be added soon. Also, can't find completed lists once they've been uploaded. Neither within the app, nor on the BTO Birdtrack web page?

P70%
by P####:

Smaller font size, and white on blue or grey on white, so not so easy to see. Hate the Twitter feed. Why was that included? Worst of all it doesn't have the Local Hotpots list yet? Rather that than the tedious Twitter. I can't bring up my record lists. Hasn't got the easy edit/delete facility. Very disappointed.

Y70%
by Y####:

List entry so much quicker and easier to use. I personally like the Twitter feed, but it can be turned off. Haven't tried to enter a casual record yet, but I guess it could be done as an incomplete list? The new summary feature is useful.

Please, please please! I thought this app was to collect data. It DOES NOT need a Twitter feed. I've told it not to show it, yet when I open the app it goes straight to the screen for the Twitter feed. Sigh. Most irritating. Shall be sticking to the legacy version. (Please can we have an update to that to remove the pop up screen that tells about the new app!) Bridtrack used to be very useable. New one is hopeless and old one is compromised. *Sad face*.

Y70%
by Y####:

This updated version provides a far better active day list that can easily be edited on the go. Keeping tally of counts as well as adding species as they are seen is flawless. I would prefer the list page being the home screen rather than twitter feed but a great app that is user friendly in the field.

Y70%
by Y####:

I never used the old app and I rarely had time to collect data and add it on pc later. The app is quick and simple to use whilst out hiking. A hit with me!

S70%
by S####:

The Home page is for Twitter feed! If I turn feed off I then start at an empty page. Have to enter United Kingdom each time to get my lists (make it default). Can't see others sightings.

K70%
by K####:

Casual records aren't as easy to add as in the old version and trying to see personal recordings is too complicated. Think I'll stick with the old version or use pc version.

Y70%
by Y####:

Sorry this upgraded app is awful, old version is more practical

H70%
by H####:

Taken on its own this is an excellent listing tool, and if the legacy app was to be retained for casual record entry I would give this version 5 stars. However, I use the (now legacy) casual record entry facility a lot for species specific surveys so its coming demise (without a specified date for capture of precision in this version) makes me mark this version down.
