About iGeology

iGeology - Interactive geological mapping of the UK.

iGeology is for anyone who wants to explore the local geology, at street-level scale, virtually anywhere in the UK. Amateur geologists, walkers, gardeners and anyone else with an interest in rocks and landscape.

Find out about the rocks at the surface (superficial deposits) or the bedrock beneath.
Discover boreholes drilled in your area and look at their log records.
Use GPS to zoom to your location.
Search on place names or postcodes.
Show a 3D view of the geological landscape.

The maps use the British Geological Survey’s national scale (1:625 000) and ‘Landranger’ scale (1:50 000) geological datasets of the United Kingdom (UK).

Map coverage
5% of 1:50000 scale data is unavailable for England, Scotland and Wales.
Only 1:625 000 scale data is available for Northern Ireland.

With a little refinement this could be an outstanding app. As other reviewers mention, it is essentially impossible to select smaller features, haptic feedback can not be deactivated, hardware buttons are not used, maps are not available offline, there is no legend for the colours, etc. Great proof of concept - polish it and I'll happily pay for it.

Complete geological map of the UK, with layers for bedrock, superficial cover, lineations etc. Some original mapping errors carried over from paper maps, but an excellent free resource.

I'm always wondering what the rocks are beneath my feet and this app makes it possible with detailed geological maps and my location using GPS. Brilliant!

I use this app a lot, I just wish it were possible to save maps, in case there is no wifi or mobile signal.

Doesn't seem to do anything else.

An excellent app, it's really cool for learning about the bedrock around you. Does its job perfectly. Would love even more if it extended it coverage to the Republic of Ireland! :)

This is a great app which I find myself using a a very regular basis. The only drawback - and it is such a frustrating one, is that the level of zoom is too limited. On modern high-resolution screens it only displays to about 1/3 the size of printed 1:50000 maps. You can, whilst your fingers touch the screen, zoom slightly more, but you can't interrogate the map except at its lower resolution - which makes it very hit and miss whether the point you interrogate is actually anywhere near the desired location! This aspect of the interface needs fixing!!!

Presumably good data, but presented badly. The screen updates are very poor. You probably wouldn't use this app unless you had to. It's a good example of why presentation is very important in an age when quite sophisticated map display is taken for granted. AJAX was invented to deal with this particular problem.

Very good for Britain but says 'no data' for everywhere in Northern Ireland

Great for checking your geological units while you're away from the office and your maps. Can be a bit fiddly on a smaller phone.

Failed to display any data at all and GPS didn't work.

App keeps crashing, the screen goes black and cannot view historical map, when I zoom in or out historical map dose not appear. Apart from that its a good, the only problem that it keeps crashing or stops, please fix

This is the same standard as the professionally used geological maps and I was surprised at how good it is since it is free. Could be a little easier to navigate (zoom) but overall is an excellent tool for the casually interested and even for professional use.

The app is informative, but.....the haptic feedback drains the battery power very quickly and there is no way to turn it off.

Awesome, but.... BGS please make this available to download/an offline map so the map is available when there's no mobile signal. Interesting geology often equals the middle of nowhere!

Wat can I say good if that's your thing but I had a quick look at the app and if that's your thing that's your thing but it's not mine so am afraid am going to give this app a miss but if I ever get a job as some kind of a surveyor looking at rocks which I want then I might have a look at the app again on rocks

Using Scroll Excel with Android 4. Easy to zoom to street level. To find out what the map colours signify just rest your finger on the part you are interested in and a description of the type of geological formation pops up. It usually offers you a link to even more data about the formation, albeit in technical geology speak. But then this is an app from the British Geological Survey so I would expect it to be technical. In response to some earlier comments I have had no issues with my gallery, having played with this all afternoon. [Edit: Well I have now! I also found a long list of random blurred geology pictures when using my file manager. However I used a different file manager and I could not find them? It appears that some file managers confuse the cache with the gallery! I have since found an identical effect with OS maps. The setting menu on my Scroll Excel gives the option of clearing the cache for each application so that is an easy option if it worries you.]

The Google Map of UK Geology. Would be nice to have a Geologic time scale in it. By far all other geologic time scale apps on Android are using American terminologies.
