Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the app use a lot of data?
A: No it minimizes data usage by compressing the image and preloading only thumbnail images of the food items.
This gives a confirmed data usage of ~200kB for scanning each menu.
In our testing, the average user would only use ~700kB per menu to get all the info he needs at the restaurant.
In other words, its negligible compared to your Facebook or Instagram usage.
Q: What are you guys using for the OCR service?
A: We are using the Microsoft Cognitive Services APIs. More specifically it is the computer vision API powered by Microsoft's machine learning backend.
Q: How does the OCR perform under poor conditions? (blur images, dark lighting)
A: Like any other OCR service, MenuSnap requires a menu image of decent quality to provide a good scan of the menu. The OCR quality gets better with the image quality of the menu photo.
Q: How many languages can the app translate into?
A: We are using Bing Translator API which provides translations into 50+ languages. However some of these languages are not supported by Android so do report back if there are any issues with translations into your language.
