Topographic Map Tiles

The Topo50 map series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland and Chatham Islands at 1:50,000 scale.

At a scale of 1:50,000, Topo50 maps show geographic features in detail. They are useful for a wide range of activities such as local navigation by vehicle or on foot, locality area planning and study of the environment. Used by a wide variety of groups, Topo50 is the official topographic map series used by New Zealand emergency services.

To produce our Topo50 maps of the New Zealand mainland we use:

• The New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000) – the coordinates of longitude and latitude
• The New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 (NZTM2000) projection – this is what enables the curved mathematical surface approximating the Earth to be represented on a flat sheet of paper.

To produce our Topo50 maps of the Chatham Islands we use the Chatham Islands Transverse Mercator 2000 (CITM2000) projection.

Satellite Imagery

LINZ has been working towards getting New Zealand’s most current publicly-owned aerial imagery – covering 95% of the country.

Aerial imagery is captured from airborne sensors and cameras. It provides an accurate photographic representation of the earth’s surface and the features on it. It can be used to visualise landscape, or to understand how an area has evolved over time.

Hated that there was no warning that the initial instruction was an instruction to initiate a tutorial. Was wondering why a marker was placed somewhere I hadn't expected, and so I tried sliding and pressing somewhere else on the screen. Seemed like random changes as I pressed the screen repeatedly. Was annoyed when I realised the random changes were part of a tutorial and that the tutorial was already multiple pages in, with no obvious way to go back, so I continued to race through the remaining pages—without reading because I saw no point in doing so if not from the beginning—, and was really unimpressed when I didn't see a quick way to start the tutorial from the beginning. Perhaps the software is useful. I don't yet know. I'm posting this an an initial impression without any idea of how to use the software because the initial user interface was so poorly done. Even if the initial instruction said, "Press anywhere in order to start tutorial," instead of merely saying, "Press anywhere," with no warning of what was to follow, my experience would have been significantly better than it was. If, at another time, I am able to work out how to use the software, and do so, and find it okay, and if the Google Play Store software allows for re-rating products, I will do so.

Thanks, big help to many people

Great app. Would consider paying for a no-adds version. Might be slightly nicer to use with non continuous zooming (as is the case with the web browser version) - at the moment it takes some fiddling to settle on a zoom where the topo map is clear and unblurred.

Nice App but... App can't be moved to external SD card. Why not? Takes up too much internal storage space.

T70%

It's simple, free and works. Thanks.

Great. Contains new maps, most of the others are 1990's. Auto - rotates for vertical or horizontal orientation. Map moves as you travel keeping it centalized. Also good that, when moving, it retains the zoom level you set it to. Great for cycling and motor-cycling. Highly recommended. Derek.

Does much the same as some other apps that you have to pay for. Ad supported, which is fair. Highly recommended if you are after a nice, clean (and free) NZ topo map app.

The Google Earth map is so old. 20 years or more. Our house doesn't even show.

Great UI, easy to use, snappy response. Can you add more layers, like Open Street Map or Cycle Map. That would gain you five stars

Can not search using coordinates, very frustrating! Would be five stars if you could

This is a nice simple topo map. It's easy to use and responsive. It's a good tool for searching out new hiking routes. The only thing I don't like is the ads.

I even managed to zero in on my manhood, so it really does show all major structures.
