Este texto es uno de los fundamentos del taoísmo filosófico y tuvo una fuerte influencia sobre otras escuelas, como el legalismo y el neoconfucianismo. Tiene un papel importante en la religión china, relacionado no sólo con el taoísmo religioso, sino también con el budismo, que cuando se introdujo por primera vez en China fue interpretado usando en gran medida palabras y conceptos taoístas.
En China la filosofía de la naturaleza y la visión del mundo están impregnadas del pensamiento taoísta y así muchos artistas, pintores, calígrafos y hasta jardineros han usado este libro como fuente de inspiración. Su influencia se ha esparcido también más allá del Lejano Oriente, ayudada por las muchas traducciones diferentes del texto a lenguas occidentales.
The Tao Te Ching (Chinese: 道德 經, Tao Te Ching, also called Tao Te Ching), whose authorship is attributed to Laozi (WG Lao Tzu, also trasliterado as Lao Tzu, "Old Master") is a Chinese classic text. Its name comes from the words that begin each of its two parts: dào 道 "way", the first of Chapter 1, and give 德 "virtue" or "power", the first of Chapter 38 with the jīng 經 added, "classic book". According to tradition, it was written around the sixth century. BC by the sage Laozi, an archivist at the court of the Zhou dynasty, by whose name the text is known in China. The true authorship and date of composition or compilation of the book are still under discussion.This text is one of the foundations of philosophical Taoism and had a strong influence on other schools, such as Legalism and Neo-Confucianism. It has an important role in Chinese religion, not only related to religious Taoism, but also with Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted using Taoist words and concepts.
In China the philosophy of nature and worldview are impregnated of Taoist thought and so many artists, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used this book as inspiration. Its influence has also spread beyond the Far East, aided by the many different translations of the text into Western languages.
