Redactada en el siglo XIII por uno o varios autores que posiblemente siguieron el fragmentario texto versificado de Robert de Boron, la Historia de Merlín reúne motivos de la tradición folclórica e historiográfica y desdibuja el carácter religioso que Boron había conferido al mago. Esta primera versión en castellano del texto íntegro del Merlín ofrece la visión más completa de este célebre personaje legendario; mago, de origen demoníaco, capaz de adivinar el pasado y el futuro y de cambiar su propia apariencia, sabio y fiel consejero del rey Arturo y sus caballeros, que se verá abocado a un triste destino al quedar prisionero de las artes mágicas reveladas por él mismo a su amada.

Para la presente edición se ha utilizado el manuscrito fechado en 1316 cuya primera publicación íntegra, en 1908, fue llevada a cabo por O. H. Sommer, en su The Vulgate Version of the Arthurian Romance. For this edition we have used the manuscript dated 1316 whose first full publication, in 1908, was conducted by OH Sommer, in his The Vulgate version of the Arthurian Romance.
