Hermann Hesse es un novelista y poeta alemán, nacionalizado suizo. A su muerte, se convirtió en una figura de culto en el mundo occidental, en general, por su celebración del misticismo oriental y la búsqueda del propio yo.

Demian: Historia de la juventud de Emil Sinclair (título original: Demian: Die Geschichte von Emil Sinclairs Jugend) es una novela que relata en primera persona el paso de la niñez a la madurez de este personaje, del escritor alemán Hermann Hesse. La obra fue publicada por vez primera en 1919, en los tiempos que siguieron a la Gran Guerra.
Emil Sinclair es un niño que ha vivido toda su vida en lo que el llama el Scheinwelt (mundo de ensueño o mundo de la luz), pero una mentira lo lleva a ampliar sus visiones del mundo y a conocer un personaje enigmático de nombre Max Demian que lo llevará por los senderos del auto-razonamiento destruyendo paradigmas materialistas que antes lo rodeaban.

Siddhartha es una novela alegórica escrita por Hermann Hesse en 1922 tras la primera guerra mundial. La misma relata la vida de un hombre hindú llamado Siddhartha. La obra ha sido considerada por el autor como un "poema hindú" y también, como la expresión esencial de su forma de vida. Muy leída en Oriente como tal, y menos en el mundo occidental.
La novela presenta un registro muy original en el que se unifican elementos líricos y épicos, incluyendo narración y meditación, elevación de la más alta espiritualidad, y, al mismo tiempo, descarnada sensualidad.

El lobo estepario (Der Steppenwolf, en alemán) es el título de una de las más célebres novelas de este escritor, y combina el estilo autobiográfico con algunos elementos de fantasía, especialmente hacia el final de la obra. El libro es en gran parte un reflejo de la profunda crisis espiritual que sufrió Hesse en la década de 1920, mientras retrata la división del protagonista entre su humanidad y su apariencia de lobo. La novela se convirtió en un éxito internacional, a pesar de Hesse demandó posteriormente que el libro fue mal interpretado en gran medida.
