京橋の和泉屋での素人芝居・忠臣蔵の舞台で、舞台用の刀が本身の刀とすり替えら、役者が死亡する事件が発生する。
死亡したのは、早野勘平役を務めた和泉屋の息子角太郎。
常盤津の師匠・文字清は「角太郎は実は私の子。刀をすり替えたのは今の和泉屋のおかみ」と主張するのだが…。
