Collect as many as you can on each run in order to progress.
However, it's worth noting that not all gears are created equal.
It might be worth going out of your way for a silver or gold gear,
rather than hoovering up a handful of bronze pickups.
You should also bear in mind that each unused pullback will earn you a few gears upon your successful completion of a level.
