Tall forteller

Tall er et utmerket hjelpemiddel for å finne ut av hvordan verden virkelig er. Med Tall Forteller kan du samle inn tall og automatisk få utført en statistisk analyse av tallene. Med et tastetrykk lager appen figur, regner ut oppsummeringstall og utfører en statistisk test.

Tall Forteller er et verktøy for å utføre grunnleggende statistisk analyse av små forskningsprosjekter:
• Undersøke og beskrive én variabel (f.eks. kjønnsfordelingen på VG-lista el. lengden på sangene til favorittartisten din .)
• Undersøke sammenhengen mellom to variabler (f.eks. om VG-forsider oftere har «Du» enn Aftenposten-forsider el. om man løper fortere hvis man er høy.)

I læring av statistikk fokuseres det ofte på matematiske formler og utregninger. Tall Forteller snur dette på hodet ved heller å ta utgangspunkt i problemstillinger man ønsker å få svar på, og hvordan man kan bruke tall til å få svar på disse. Statistisk analyse er en blanding av matematikk og skjønn. Appen tar seg av de matematiske utregningene, men du som bruker appen må selv vite hva slags type tall du har samlet inn, og tolke resultatene av utregningene.

I den tilhørende boka med samme navn finnes flere problemstillinger og undersøkelser du kan bruke som utgangspunkt. I boka finnes enkle oppskrifter på hvordan man kan bruke appen for å få svar på en rekke problemstillinger rundt det å undersøke og beskrive én variabel (såkalt deskriptiv statistikk), og sammenhengen mellom to variabler (såkalt bivariat analyse). Boka gir også enkle, formelfrie forklaringer på ulike statistiske ord og uttrykk.
Sammen gir boka og appen en praktisk innføring i grunnleggende statistisk analyse, for unge og voksne, med fokus på forståelse heller enn på formler.

Figures Storytelling is a tool to perform basic statistical analysis of small research projects:

In learning of statistics focus is often on mathematical formulas and calculations. Tall Tells turns this on the head rather to be based on issues one wants to answer, and how to use numbers to answer them. Statistical analysis is a mixture of mathematics and discretion. The app takes care of the mathematical calculations, but you are using the app must know what kind of numbers you have collected, and interpret the results of the calculations.

In the accompanying book of the same name are several issues and research you can use as a starting point. In the book are simple recipes for how to use the app to get answers to a number of issues around it to examine and describe one variable (called descriptive statistics), and the relationship between two variables (called bivariate analysis). The book also provides basic formula-free explanations of various statistical expressions.
Together, the book and the app a practical introduction to basic statistical analysis, for youth and adults, with a focus on understanding rather than formulas.
