About SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD

*** REQUIRES ROOT ACCESS ***

Android 4.4 KitKat removes your ability to write files to the MicroSD card (on phones/tablets that have both internal memory and user-installed MicroSD cards). NextApp SDFix restores this ability by modifying a configuration file. As this app changes a system configuration file, it requires root access.

WARNING! PLEASE READ BEFORE INSTALLING:
---------------------------------------
* THIS APP REQUIRES ROOT ACCESS. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL THE APP.
* This app is used to change a device configuration file.
* Please read this entire app listing for a description of exactly what this app does to determine if it is appropriate for your device and/or custom ROM.
* This app is designed to solve a specific problem. If you don't have that problem, don't install this app.
* This app is only useful on devices that have a user-installed MicroSD card. If you have a Google Nexus device or other device without a MicroSD card that you physically installed yourself, then this app isn't going to be helpful.
* This app is likely only useful if you have a stock ROM. If you're running an aftermarket ROM like Cyanogenmod, then there is no reason to install this app (good aftermarket ROMs don't suffer from the problem that this app corrects).
* NO WARRANTY: as is generally the case with all root modifications, you assume all risk by using this software.
* As with any root modification, ensure you have the knowledge to fully restore your device to stock if required.

[ About MicroSD Cards in Android 4.4 / KitKat ]

When Google released Android 4.4, they specified that applications you download can no longer write to user-installed MicroSD cards. Apps can still write to internal flash storage. Some devices (like Google Nexus devices) only have internal storage, and are unaffected. Other devices (e.g. Samsung Galaxy and Note devices) have the ability to expand their storage space by installing a MicroSD card. When KitKat is installed on such devices, apps are limited to only being able to manipulate files on the built-in storage, with write-access to the MicroSD card being restricted.

This change represents a removal of functionality compared with Android 4.3. 4.3 allowed apps to write to the MicroSD card, as did prior versions.

The limitation introduced in KitKat does not affect the capabilities of preinstalled apps, only apps you choose to install. Apps preinstalled by Google, your device manufacturer, and your carrier still have this ability. Only apps that you choose to install are restricted.

[ Technical Details ]

NextApp SDFix will modify the configuration file located at /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml to allow apps to write to the MicroSD card. Specifically, SDFix will add the Android UNIX group "media_rw" to the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission's configuration. This will enable apps (only those that you granted write access permissions to when you installed them) to write files to the MicroSD card. On many devices, this is effectively reverting the state of this permission back to the way it was configured in Android 4.3. This modification is carried out by modifying the existing XML file, rather than replacing it.

A backup of the original configuration file will be saved at /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml.original-pre-sdfix (provided one does not already exist). Reverting this modification can be accomplished by using a root -enabled file manager to replace the /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file with the backed up version.

[ Additional Information ]

This app is free and has no advertisements (with the exception of links to other NextApp apps when it completes its task).

--- Please do not contact me with requests for information on how to obtain root access on your device. The process is different for every device, and often requires technical expertise to install. ---

This does what it says it does, it every time I reboot my tablet since installing this, it forgets the wallpaper and I have it set it again. This didn't happen before I installed and ran this. If the devs have a fix I'll give 5 stars.

This fixed the problem that was plaguing my SD card in my Note 2 after I flashed back to a stock ROM. I was unable to store anything on my SD card, and apps couldn't read anything on it. I installed this app to fix it, and at first it didn't work (stuck on orange screen for >5 minutes) because my root access through SuperSU broke. After I re-installed SuperSU and got that working properly, I ran this program once again and 5 seconds later I had a working SD card. I don't know what I would have done without this app. Also I am on 4.4.2.

I just bought a new phone running 4.4.2 Kitkat, and i was disappointed that i could no longer have full access to data stored on my SDcard. So i found a way to root my phone, then i downloaded your app, viola i now have full access to my SDcard. Amazing app, i recommend this. Five stars.

The negative reviews of this app are pure BS, the product of clueless users, many of whom obviously can't read. It's for KitKat...not Lollipop, not Marshmallow or any other Android version, for a very specific problem involving add-in MicroSD card access on KitKat. If you're running KitKat and your device is rooted PROPERLY (I recommend SuperSU), then this app will work.

I had jelly bean on my phone and roehsoft ram expander worked correctly. Then I upgraded to kitkat 4.4.2, and now the ram expander can't find the swap file once it has been created. I thought that this Aap could help me out by correcting read and write SD permission but it does nothing....

Tried 1 YouTube solution & almost bricked Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet running Lollipop 5.1.1 . Factory reset got me back to start point. Used SDFIX even though not sure if work on Lollipop 5.1.1 It worked great & now all my apps can pull files off ext sd card, edit them and save back to ext sd card. Thank you!

Google for some reason thought it was a good idea to get rid of write permissions to external SD cards. I installed Titanium Backup to my internal card and backed up all my files then copied over to my external SD. Time came for me to update my backups...no go, would just get "batch backup inttrupted: insufficient free space" error. Googled up on this error, saw this app mentioned, downloaded, ran it...i can now backup apps to my external SD...YAY! Thanks NextApp, Inc!!!

You must have your phone rooted before using this or it will do nothing. It worked perfectly on my L720T running stock(for the time) 4.4 android. Make sure you reboot after it completes.

by T####:

I took a look at the /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file before and after to see how you'd do it. I guess theres no harm in leaving the backup XML sitting there because people who are able to run your app probably aren't taking OTA's that'd fail if they messed around in /system, eh? The fix for my issues was a combination of doing the "adb shell -> su -> restorecon -vR /data/media/0" process and then running your app. Now I can write to internal storage and external storage again, and can finally enjoy Lollipop!

I was going to copy & paste permissions from 4.3 but I downloaded FX manager which led me to this beautiful app which saved me the time of editing the permissions. I have an AT&T S5 so you know all of the additional issues associated when it comes to rooting & etc. Thanks again for such an easy to use app that works flawlessly!

Verizon note 3 4.4.2 works. Glad to have devs work out the kinks the carrier, google and Samsung throw at operating our smartphone in a way we consumers deam smart. My 32 gig internal memory is at it's limit so obvioualy I want to be able to write to SD card.

T70%

Thank you for making this. It is absolutely retarded for Google to do this. I hope to hell people learn about this and get mad and force Google to reverse this ridiculous attempt to control what we can do with our devices.

Xperia Z1 kk 444. Rooted of course. Trying to use file manager such as file commander to copy multiple pictures when testing this app. It run smoothly .. Then it stop. Need to cancel a part of the operation. Some pictures copied. I can watched 'em via standard gallery. Then a minutes later they are all gone..the files automatically deleted :( What happened?

The first time I had an issue that didn't allow Titanium to backup to my SD card I manually edited system files to fix it. After doing a factory reset and re-rooting the issue came back. This time I used SDFix. It works fast and gets the job done. Thanks to the Dev's

I used this on my LG G Pad 8.3 GPE and it worked fine. Then out've the blue I cannot write to my SD card I don't know if Google did something new to stop this app fix from working but I'm really bummed now. I'm gonna have to investigate this...

I'm 70. You wonderful people who take the trouble to help folk like me. Our generation perseveres alone. Eventually we ask for help by Googling. Out there someone directs me to this app. It's hard for me understand that so many just want to help. Samsung Note 2. Kit Kat 4.4.2 & TitaniumBackup

Just what I needed. Hadnt realised google had blocked the write feature until i tried to edit some music tag info via poweramp (music is stored on my ext sd). Recently got a samsung s5 and upgraded to lollipop 5.0. This app worked perfectly to fix the problem. Now i can do things the way i want to without ridiculous restrictions. Great fix.

I was wondering why Titanium Backup was saying insufficient space for my 32gb sdcard. I realized that it was because KitKat 4.4.2 patched all 3rd-party applications writing to my sdcard. That included Titanium Backup. I just installed this app, pressed a couple of buttons, rebooted my phone, and bingo-bango (lol) TB was able to backup to my sdcard.

I am still surprised when I have to recommend this app to people who don't yet understand about kitkat permissions. Glad that we still have a choice between Google's imposed security measures, and functionality of all of our file managers, extraction tools, etc. Thank you so much.

This app fixed the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy A3 (SM-A300Y) running Lollip 5.0.2. If other Lollipop users find this useful the developer/s should consider promoting it for Lollipop as well.

This is hands down the best mod app in the play store. Fixed my storage issue with kitkat & now I have freed up about 3g of internal storage so far. I was very close to running low. Very VERY impressed. Thanks to the developer(s)!

What you want from a device is freedom and Google always makes way for us. This app does what Google mockingly restricted. That's all right Google, we know you want us to bear responsibility of our acts. We love you google.

Fixed the write permission on the SD card for TiBu. SO beyond happy and it's FREE! My phone was freaking out every morning because it was out of space. Manually transferring files to SD on a daily basis was getting annoying.

Worked just fine on my rooted Samsung Galaxy Light (SGH-T399N/MetroPCS) running KitKat 4.4.2. There are so many claims out there that just being rooted takes care of this issue with KitKat and Lollipop, but that's not true. Granting root privileges to user apps does NOT allow them to write/change the contents of the external SD card, a good example being Titanium Backup. Yes, if you have enough Android knowledge, you can make this change manually, but I have quite a bit and did not know how to accomplish this. SDFix does the job in less than 5 minutes! Thanx NextApp!

Finally found this after searching for a way to delete videos from my microSD in VLC once I had watched them without needing a root filesystem browser to delete the files.
