About Technical Keyboard

The NextApp Technical Keyboard is a derivative of the AOSP keyboard, with added arrow keys and other special keys, and a slightly tweaked QWERTY layout that is closer to that of a PC Keyboard. There are multiple themes to choose from.

A "precision feedback" feature increases feedback vibration when your presses are not near the center of the keys. When autocorrection is applied, a double-pulse feedback is rendered.

This is a BETA RELEASE of this app. If you experience issues with it, please report them to android@nextapp.com. It's extremely difficult to have a conversation using the Play Store review system.

This version comes with English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish dictionaries.

I would greatly appreciate feedback on the keyboard layouts, including the arrangement of special keys on the alphabet keyboard, symbols keyboard, and function keyboards.

Function Keyboard

This keyboard includes a function key ("Fn") toward its lower left corner which can be used to access many additional keys typically found on a PC or Mac keyboard, including:

• Cursor Arrow Keys
• Page Up / Page Down
• Insert, Delete, Home, and End.
• Function F1-F12.
• Ctrl and Alt
• Tab
• Escape

The fundamental QWERTY keyboard layout has been very slightly tweaked to more closely replicate that of a PC keyboard. Specifically, the size of the left shift key has been reduced such that the third row (ZXCVBNM) is no longer overly shifted to the right. The shift key is now a standard sized key. This modification only applies to phones (the AOSP keyboard already uses this layout for tablets).

Permissions

This keyboard is based on the AOSP keyboard from Android KitKat 4.4. It uses identical permissions to that keyboard. The "read contacts" permission is used to autocomplete names from your contacts. This keyboard DOES NOT send any data to anyone.

Thank you for helping beta test this keyboard!

I like this keyboard app very much but it has at least 1 REALLY ANNOYINGLY flaw. During typing the darn keyboard randomly just goes away before I am done typing! This happens multiple times during typing even a single paragraph! Fix that and I will give 5 stars.

Superb! Easily the best keyboard available. I love the new themes, and the layout is very clean and easy on the eyes. I did find getting the gesture typing fiddly to get going, and at first the suggestion bar kept disappearing. Seems to be fine now, however. Thanks for this great update!

This keyboard looks almost stock but can switch to other panes with arrows, ESC, function, alt, Ctrl, text selection, copy/paste, etc. Works great with ssh and terminal apps, and has a comfy regular mode for general purpose use as well. It is the best of both worlds, a true gem! Great update, long press for tab brilliant for terminal sessions! One minor request: typing library status should show the full path to the currently installed file.

I Like this keyboard very much I wish developer will bring all the features of Gboard like gesture, amoled black and theme options and others... This could be a best keyboard for all ....

Just wow, Everything's perfect, please, for professionallity (not required) add a layout manager so you can arrange the special chars however you want. Thnx. Also, gesture typing, that'd be AWESOME!

Best keyboard!!

Been using this keyboard since it came out and it has been one of the best ones as far as not making hardly any typos. It seems like this app has since been abandoned, and it is sad because I liked the blue theme. Still, it does the job well, so I can't complain there. I've tried the likes of Hacker's keyboard, swiftkey, ASK, and Google, but this one is the best for accuracy and extra keys for geeky stuff.

The keyboard for ALL users! Functions very smoothly and even has computer function keys for those of us who like to do scripting, coding and things that require those commands & symbols. It is especially handy for us visually impaired and blind people who like to code. One thing that can really help us visually impaired and blind people I wonder if there is a way to make copying and pasting easier. It is almost impossible to separate tex from the body of the document as it stands now. Is it possible, devs?

S70%
by S####:

Thanks for adding a "Fn" key. PROBLEMS = There's NO way to disable auto-capitalise, auto-spacing, & some other auto-behaviors that I'm forgetting. I REFUSE to actually USE this thing except when I need the "Fn" key. Please make ALL of the "auto" behaviors OPTIONAL if you want 5 stars.

First off, excellent keyboard. Simply love it. Being a writer I've longed for a functional keyboard most of all with a Tab button! However, I harbour two negative feelings with it. 1) Does not automatically space after word 2) No quick access to common punctuation. Otherwise, spot on!

I've tried a lot of keyboards to find one that fits my needs and this one I believe is it. The dev put this out as s beta and I believe he has lost interest in it, that being said it works OK and doesn't need updates to fit my needs. Great app. PS..has a lot of misc symbols too.

hello comatose dev :) I'm actually typing this on this very keyboard, in 2017 (been using it on/off since 2014) the biggest gripe I have is none of the themes show alternative key labels, esp number row (think uk vs us layouts) also i think this keyboard shouldn't be abandoned just because it won't support more languages. imho its better to just dump language support other than english (or make it optional only) just like in the beginning and make the app 3mb small again, after all this is a keyboard for terminal/vnc. turn on again the test features and offer it for money or free, i don't care just do it already, don't kill this excellent alternative app, or its development!

C70%

This keyboard is the only one I use for programming and major editing of documents. I have not found another keyboard that has all the features this one has. I hope the developer doesn't abandon it.

You've made such a beautiful keyboard so close to an actual KB, but made a huge mistake: an actual KB doesn't behave like that on a long press/release. Copy that behavior and you are god. Also Ctrl doesn't actually send left Ctrl event.

it would be nice if the FN key was always available, and not replaced by the underscore key. Underscore could appear above the ABC key?

1 yr ago I wrote: I've purchased and fought with most of the android keyboards over the last ten+ years. This has the potential to be the one I can use for everything, finally! Some work to do, but fingers crossed for this one. ... Now it's still in beta and I'm wondering if it's even being developed. I can't remember the last time an update was issued. Lowering score progressively until signs of life emerge.

..why Zemana Antivirus detects it as a potential key logger? Can you prove that is a false positive?Until then I either uninstall it or stop using it. I have a note 4 stock not rooted 6.0.1 if that might help

Love all the features of this keyboard. Am able to have just one keyboard now (removed Hackers Keyboard) for the same memory usage as the stock aosp keyboard. This will be my mainstay from now on since installing the gesture library. Is it just me though? Isn't 75mb memory high compared to say 50 for Fleksy, or 15 for Keymonk? Would really like this keyboard with that kind of memory usage. Am willing to deal though seeing as this one is so useful. Thanks

It's permanently there but I wish it had swipe. I have to switch between Google and this keyboard only for swiping. I'm fond of this developer. I like their explorer and browser as well.

But it also lacks: (1) Swype as in Google keyboard (2) Punctuation and special characters on alpha buttons like jelly bean keyboard or hackers keyboard. Also even AOSP keyboard uses less RAM (21 vs 25 MB)

X70%
by X####:

This is a pretty good keyboard! Kinda like Hacker's Keyboard but it looks better, is more accurate and has better prediction. Still, the beta test period has expired. There should also be an option to switch back the zxcvbnm row because in my opinion, the shift key is important.

It's an amazing keyboard. Sure, it is not the best of the best, but it's quite close. It is as good as touchpal once was, eventhough it doesnt have a swipe input, it's great.

Always looking further for more NextApp apps as they always deliver the merchandise ! Keep up the good work and bring more themes :) !
