About SQRL

WARNING: this is an early preview and was published as proof of concept. It's not compatible with the reference implementation, which was published later and changed the protocol. Once the protocol and the whole spec is final, this client will be compatible. Until then only use this client as demo or showcase and spread the idea of SQRL.

SQRL is a new login method. It stands for secure, quick, reliable login and solves many issues we are facing in the current web. Username/password combinations aren't needed anymore.

Your identity is stored on your device and never leaves it. Each website receives its own random secret, which you don't need to remember. In order to protect your key, you need to choose a password for encryption. That's the only password you'll ever need.

To login it's only necessary to scan a QR-Code from the website. That's it, after that you are logged in.

What are users saying about SQRL

L70%
by L####:

Well done. Works beautifully on the test site. I hope this will be adopted universally as the de facto secure login method. Easier, quicker, and the site on the other end doesn't have to store my password and keep it safe.

Y70%
by Y####:

Camera in this app does not work on my Galaxy s5.

N70%
by N####:

Great idea and works! Let me export the sqlr code or at least be able to copy and paste it in an email. I know it should not be stored electronically which is the whole idea

Y70%
by Y####:

This can't become the norm soon enough. My only concern is, how would you use this to login while only using the mobile device it's installed on?

R70%
by R####:

Now that Steve is (apparently) finished, will this be updated to the newest reference version?

M70%
by M####:

I was expecting it to work, but not even the test page would recognise the image on my Samsung S5. SQRL is a great idea, but the app is not mature yet for mainstream usage.

G70%
by G####:

Always says "An unknown error has occured" when trying to authenticate.

R70%
by R####:

Working well with test site. Id like to see an identity selector. I need more than one login to same url. Eg. Site admin and plain user.

L70%
by L####:

Works on my Note 3 with Android 5.0. Really hope I could start using this log in for real sites and services soon.

L70%
by L####:

This app does not fully check the entered SQRL password. Entering just the first 8 characters correctly is enough to get in... Logins don't work after getting in with the shortened password.

I70%
by I####:

The app seems well-written and comfortable to use - now we just need to see some real-world adoption for SQRL.

U70%
by U####:

I'm ready for this to be the new paradigm.

U70%
by U####:

Works great on MotoX (2013). Thanks for setting up the test server, are there others authored by different devs to use for further tests?

U70%
by U####:

Very easy to use however, writing out the key by hand may be a little excessive.

H70%
by H####:

Love SQRL and this app does a nice job, though when getting errors, I'd like more information on what the error is. The test server works fine but the test site on GRC just gives an error and a smiley face. Tell me why! Keep up the great work.

G70%
by G####:

I wanted to try sqrl I download the app on my ZTE Speed. I created the login for the app and I get to the menu with create and import sqrl-id. no matter what I do I can't even get to the areas to do the demo websites. I am on Kitkat 4.4.4

F70%
by F####:

Thinking of a day, in the medium to long future, when my grand & great grand kids will ask, "Pop, how did they use usernames & passwords?"

M70%
by M####:

The sooner this gets incorporated into online banking the better. Can't believe Halifax still have the drop down menu for security and not even 2-step verification.

A70%
by A####:

Implements sqrl protocol well and is simple to use. I forgot my password and had to reimport my ID. Thank goodness for the rescue feature. It saved me.

O70%
by O####:

Great effort but keep receiving an unknown error when authenticating w demo site at grc

J70%
by J####:

Great work! Now just can't wait to see this get more implemented on websites.

M70%
by M####:

The protocol isn't finished yet, but the app works great so far.

M70%
by M####:

This can't become the norm soon enough. My only concern is, how would you use this to login while only using the mobile device it's installed on?

U70%
by U####:

Camera doesn't appear to work on a Galaxy S3, but I'm sure that'll be ironed out. Can't wait for this to go mainstream to all devices!

Q70%
by Q####:

Must fix Galaxy 3 camera issue. Must support .sqrl file export. Current client not generating compliant sqrl qr code (cannot import into grc sample app as unrecognized sqrl qr code) Does not authenticate to any but test website provided. Must support .sqrl file import.

U70%
by U####:

Thanks for creating the SQRL client for android. Unfortunately I'm not using it yet. In protecting me from myself you have blocked me by requiring me to write down my rescue code. I'm on my phone. I don't have paper or a pen. Just let me copy and paste it to Lastpass - why should I write it?

D70%
by D####:

Can't wait for SQRL or something similar to be standardized and for more websites to adopt it! Then at least when a major website like eBay or Sony are hacked, there won't be the situation where the passwords of millions of users are exposed and they are forced to change their passwords.

U70%
by U####:

Using my note 2 I hope this takes off. As a concept to me this seams near perfect. Thanks for putting in the effort to get the android client working.

K70%
by K####:

Very very very cool. I was surprised how easy it was to setup and generating the identity was automatic after creating the password to protect the identity. This is how security should have worked a long time ago but the infrastructure to do so did not exist. Well welcome to the future. The only thing missing is a list of sites the app has authenticated to for revocation purposes.

U70%
by U####:

I'm looking forward to this being adopted on all sites. SQRL is easy to use, secure and one strong password is all you need to access all your online accounts. The App is well designed and easy to use.

U70%
by U####:

Can't wait to have this working. Good job!

U70%
by U####:

Camera in this app does not work on my Galaxy s5.

N70%
by N####:

Great concept, but no camera, no work.

U70%
by U####:

Can't wait till its fully working. Thanks

M70%

This might be the future of authentication. Created by infamous Steve Gibson, the SQRL system could replace passwords.

C70%
by C####:

The app seems well-written and comfortable to use - now we just need to see some real-world adoption for SQRL.

U70%
by U####:

Now we just need wide adoption

U70%
by U####:

Still not working on galaxy s 3 camera. App not useful without camera access. Sign up process was smooth and polished though.

U70%
by U####:

Cannot wait for this is to be adopted by everyone!

H70%
by H####:

The future of simple, safe & powerful authentication.
