About Physics Toolbox Play
Useful for educational outreach in informal STEM learning for ages 8+ and for classroom introductions to sensors, physics, and STEM careers, this app is comprised of a series of data-verified challenges. Each of the 7 challenges include one or more tasks that require the user to use sensors to accomplish a goal, followed by simple concept questions about physics, and an example of how the sensor is useful in real-life STEM careers. This app was developed thanks to an award of a mini-grant from the American Physical Society, as a sub-award from the National Science Foundation, grant NSF#1404843, and the help of an international leadership and advisory board. The 7 challenges include the following:
- Sound Meter: Measure how much sound is in the environment around you.
- G-Force Meter: Measure your motion in three dimensions.
- Magnetometer: Find magnetic materials around you.
- Proximeter: Use a light-based motion sensor to make a simple pendulum timer.
- Compass: Find the directions of North, South, East, and West from where you are standing. (BETA)
- Light Meter: Change the amount of light hitting the sensor.
- Barometer: Measure how pressure changes in the room.
