Early in his literary life Gogol excelled in writing short stories, which won Russia's circle of literary admiration including Alexander Pushkin's "poet and playwright Rossi from the Romantic era between 1800 to 1840, regarded by many as the greatest poet of Russian, and the founder of modern Russian literature."

After that could Gogol gain fame and good reputation, he began to work on writing several plays in which criticism of the Russian political corruption wanted, but the neglect of his first attempt to write a satirical play about bureaucratic imperialism for fear of censorship.
