تعتبر هذه الرواية واحدة من أكثر الكتب فلسفية حيث يتطرق فيها إلى المعضلات الوجودية ويقوم من خلالها بفتح جدل مع الفلسفة الغربية الحديثة. بطل الرواية يعاني بما سمي لاحقاً “مرض القرن” يحدثنا عن السخافة أو الخمول الخارج من ألمه الجسدي والعقلي إلى جانب بعض الأفكار ومعتقدات الشخص الذي تدور حوله القصة مثل أن التقدم لا يستحق أي جهد وهذه الفكرة طرحت فيما بعد عند العديد من الكتاب والفلاسفة مثل جان بول سارتر وايتالو سفيفو، ويعتبرها البعض أول رواية في الفلسفة الوجودية. This novel is considered one of the most philosophical books, where to address the existential dilemmas and through which open debate with modern Western philosophy. The protagonist suffers what later called "century's disease" tells us about the absurdity or inactivity outside of the physical and mental pain as well as some of the ideas and beliefs of the person who revolves around the story, such as that progress is not worth any effort and this idea put forward later when many writers and philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre Italo Svivo, some considered the first novel in existential philosophy.
