本作品は、1974年から1975年にかけて、静岡県清水市(現：静岡県静岡市清水区)の入江地区で少女時代を過ごした、作者のさくらももこの投影である小学3年生の「まる子ちゃん」が、家族や友達と共に繰り広げる日常生活を描いた、笑いあり、涙ありのコメディです。

もともと実話がベースだったため、ギャグ漫画として独白風のツッコミが入っていることが本作の特徴の一つでもあります。
