Grid Reference for Android
I love this app...it's very small, but highly effective, simply displaying a grid reference and accuracy very clearly. I do a lot of survey work on moorland, and this is my 'go-to' backup when my mapping grade GPS runs out of batteries! I like its simplicity, I didn't want anything that tried to be a higher spec bit of GPS kit, I just wanted something which showed me clearly where I was. Great app, and I recommend it to everyone.
And is a basic app which does one thing well rather than many things badly. The developer seems to responds promptly to issues raised here, so here's another - the 3 figure reading does not round to the nearest figure e.g. if the 4 figure number is 3677 then the 3 figure reading is 367, not 368 which is closer.
Does exactly what it says, and glad I remembered about this as an app I'd used a long time ago but sadly forgotten about. Perfect for use in conjunction with traditional maps, and the precision settings are very useful - though would be nice if maybe the 4th/8th digits in 8-figure references (etc) were greyed or in a slightly smaller font, since most people are most familiar with 6-figure references but the extra precision is genuinely useful. Compass is a nice touch, though of course in practice most devices' magnetometers need to be calibrated before they can be trusted, so use with care and know how to calibrate your Android's compass (usually a few twists on each of its three axes does the job). Recent major update good and welcome for modern devices, but would be nice to see some kind of status indicator (satellite count x/y, perhaps?) while waiting for a lock as there appears to be no feedback otherwise, and I sense this may be slightly worse than it was in the old version. Update: thanks for adding the satellite count, do have 5 stars :) Update: unsure of the rationale behind the new rounding logic; conventional "round" rather than "floor" would make more sense to me.
If ever I'm not sure of my location I use this app all the time ,never failed once. Brilliant
I've used this several times on walks, but until yesterday when the blizzard hit us on the Lake fells and we really needed to confirm exactly where we were so we could plot a route out I hadn't fully appreciated it. I would never want to rely 100% on tech when navigating, but it gave us pause and stopped us taking the wrong route. Thanks!
Works fine on most devices couple of devices having trouble when in landscape mode chops lower half of numbers off can't change the orientation of these devices as a landscape screen fitted in car.
In landscape mode on my device it fails to display the northings digits.
It works really well. Very useful in accurately locating broken stiles for others to repair.
I use this a lot when out doing fieldwork. It's great!
Does one thing and does it perfectly.
Dies what says on the tin. Thanks.
Great app, basic in its use, but why want more?
It's just excellent.
Perfect.
As a rambler, I believe this is a briliant idea. Yes, I can read a map and plot my own gr but sometimes this instant readout would be an advantage (satellite line-of-sight accepting of course). Forgive me for only four stars but more use in the field will, I'm sure, boost that.
Thanks for letting me know about the update. It's now working fine on my Sony M4 phone. I'm really pleased.
*Edit* THANK YOU!! Just made my year and life easier haha, there is now a settings menu on my phone! * Loved this app on my Samsung S3. Now I've got an S5 Neo and can't find the settings option,so can't change it to an 8 figure grid ref (which I need for my recordings). Does anyone know how to do this, please?
It's great. Couldn't want anything more. So useful.
This really does the job and the new linking directly to apps is very useful.
Perfect for me
Great app.. current update gives accurate readings down to the nearest metre.
Great
Does exactly what it should, and nothing more. No silly extra permissions, distractions or battery eating extras. Just what I need as a teaching aid for navigation training. Thanks!
Does exactly what it says, and glad I remembered about this as an app I'd used a long time ago but sadly forgotten about. Perfect for use in conjunction with traditional maps, and the precision settings are very useful - though would be nice if maybe the 4th/8th digits in 8-figure references were greyed or a slightly smaller font, since most people are most familiar with 6-figure references but the extra precision is genuinely useful. Doubt the 10-figure references are that useful given typical GPS accuracy, but maybe some devices can resolve reliably to that level - not ours though, showing wild fluctuation in the last digits! Compass is a nice touch, though of course in practice most devices' magnetometers need to be calibrated before they can be trusted, so use with care and know how to calibrate your Android's compass (usually a few twists on each of its three axes does the job). Reading some of the reviews, it looks like you should update the app to add an on-screen menu for the various options. Many devices have a soft menu button, but Samsungs in particular don't display that toolbar, and this hinders access to some useful features of your app (confirmed on our Tab4).
Gives you UK grid reference nice and big. Spot on.
Using on Samsung Galaxy S3. I especially like the minimalist app permissions and that it is not impacted by being out of range of phone signal. This is great for confirming location on OS map to the accuracy I need (I am seeing the 100m west feature but now I know about it I can always add 1 and know the area I am in)
Why can i not change the 6 figure grid ref to 10 figure grid ref.. there is no button to access the dropdown to change the gps accuracy as shown ..... Galaxy s5
Great on my old galaxy ace but I can't seem to change the number of figures from 6 on my new galaxy a3
use with any OS Landranger map & the grid reference will show your exact position on the map within a few metres. Simple to use & no gimmicky distractions or pointless adverts.
I'm a mountain instructor and this is perfect. Has everything I need and no other clutter. "Copy" function useful. Thank-you for a great app and for keeping your eye on exactly what is needed
Simple, effective, easy to use, good on yer Arthur! Recommended
Works very well, very useful app :)
A simple app that could save lives. Accuracy about 5 meters.
Very useful app for os grid coordinates.
Small but perfectly formed...
How do I switch from 6 figures to 8 figures ?
Great app for double checking that you are where you think you are if your map reading skills aren't the best.
Unable to change from a 3 figure grid reference.dont bother.
This app would be great if you could input a grid ref and be guided to it by a simple direction arrow and distance to the grid.

Couldn't get a position, but the alternative OS locate works fine
