Meaning of Color in Early Childhood
Children in their early childhood enjoy colors with pure joy, as they are more sensitive to colors than to shapes. But as they develop language abilities with age and start to hide or control their feelings, their interest in colors fades away. The mentality of young children is well reflected in the colors of their drawings. The specific colors in the drawings mostly match the children’s emotions and impulsive children tend to show strong interests in colors. Because colors affect children’s senses and feelings, they can contribute to children’s emotional development.
The Development Process of Young Children’s Sense of Color
The growth process of humans can be measured with certain standards; one is the physical and external characteristic and the other is psychological and immanent characteristic.
The external characteristics can be easily recognized by age or the extent of growth, but the internal and psychological characteristics, namely development of intelligence, emotions, or feelings are hard to measure. Such form of development is shown through diverse expressive methods and one of them is drawing (colors).
Newborn~2 years
The newborns respond to touch, brightness, and movements and start to distinguish colors after 2-3 months. Before 1 year, they are somewhat responsive to colors, but it is after 2 years of age that they start to show strong responses toward colors they like.
2~3 years
At this stage, muscular motion and coordination ability are established and colors only play a secondary role. The most important role of colors is to help distinguish drawing paper and drawing. Hence, it is important to choose colors and mediums that contrast to each other. (For instance, white drawing paper and black crayon, blackboard and white chalk.)
At 3 years of age, colors start to be interesting to children and the change of colors begins to be important. Scribbling with different colors will also be helpful.
3~4 years
At this stage, symbolic and intuitive formations are mainly established. Children at this stage express subjective forms with their drawings rather than the exact image of the subject. Accordingly, they use subjective colors that are unrelated to the subject they are drawing.
4~7 years
Children at this stage have developed a sense of sovereignty and are filled with confidence. They are more interested in drawing lines than in the relationship between the subject and colors. They start to recognize the difference in shapes and forms before recognizing difference in colors. They choose colors they like to paint humans. The relationship between children and colors is decided by the emotional experience. (For example, the clothes of the person they are close with, the clothes of their moms.)
