कुरु क्षेत्र की युद्धभूमि में श्रीकृष्ण ने अर्जुन को जो उपदेश दिया था वह श्रीमद्भगवदगीता के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। यह महाभारत के भीष्मपर्व का अंग है। गीता में १८ अध्याय और ७०० श्लोक हैं। जैसा गीता के शंकर भाष्य में कहा है- तं धर्मं भगवता यथोपदिष्ट वेदव्यास: सर्वज्ञोभगवान् गीताख्यै: सप्तभि: श्लोकशतैरु पनिबंध । ज्ञात होता है कि लगभग ८वीं सदी के अंत में शंकराचार्य (७८८-८२०) के सामने गीता का वही पाठ था जो आज हमें उपलब्ध है। १०वीं सदी के लगभग भीष्मपर्व का जावा की भाषा में एक अनुवाद हुआ था। उसमें अनेक मूलश्लोक भी सुरक्षित हैं। श्रीपाद कृष्ण बेल्वेलकर के अनुसार जावा के इस प्राचीन संस्करण में गीता के केवल साढ़े इक्यासी श्लोक मूल संस्कृत के हैं। उनसे भी वर्तमान पाठ का समर्थन होता है। गीता की गणना प्रस्थानत्रयी में की जाती है, जिसमें उपनिषद् और ब्रह्मसूत्र भी संमिलित हैं। अतएव भारतीय परंपरा के अनुसार गीता का स्थान वही है जे उपनिषद् और ब्रह्मसूत्रों का है।
