दसवीं शताब्दी ईस्वी के अरब लेखक और इतिहासकार मसऊदी के अनुसार अल्फ लैला की कथामाला का आधार फारसी की प्राचीन कथामाला 'हजार अफसाना' है। अल्फ लैला की कई कहानियाँ जैसे 'मछुवारा और जिन्न' 'कमरुज्जमा और बदौरा' आदि कहानियाँ सीधे 'हजार अफसाना' से जैसी की तैसी ली गई हैं।

अलिफ लैला एक ऐसी नवयुवती की कहानी है, जिसने एक ज़ालिम बादशाह से विवाह करने के बाद न केवल उसका हृदय परिवर्तित कर दिया, अपितु अनेक नवयुवतियों का जीवन भी बचा लिया।

इस कथा के अनुसार, बादशाह शहरयार अपनी मलिका की बेवपफाई से दुःखी होकर उसका और उसकी सभी दासियों का कत्ल कर देता है और प्रतिज्ञा करता है कि रोजाना एक स्त्री के साथ विवाह करूंगा और अगली सुबह उसे कत्ल कर दूंगा।
