MX Mariner - Marine Charts for Android
App is very well designed and very useful. Especially like the Active Captain capability. Just one problem - my new Galaxy S7 shows the AC markers as very tiny dots. Almost invisible. Any way to enlarge the AC markers?
Basic but very useful chart plotter. Very good quality charts for the UK and Ireland (UKHO). Fast and works well at sea. After trying a few other ( more expensive) apps, I think this one deserves a five star rating.
Updated review..Been using MX Mariner for a year now and time for a reassessment. I think my decision to go with this app, after trying out six or seven chart plotter programs, was the right choice. The developer is very responsive and helpful. The app is is stable and fast. I am running Android 4.4 on my original model Nexus 7 and 6.1 on my Moto G3, no problems. I am not much interested in marinas but the new integration with the Active Captain database will be nice for those that are. It looks like you don't need to have Active Captain and Adobe Air installed on your tablet at all; MX downloads its own copy of the database. Since I started using MX in 2014 a number of updates have added useful features including the ability to insert, delete, and move waypoints and routes. The included utility allows one to easily make up a BC "region" with Canadian BSB3 charts for those who need them (everyone?). Highly recommended.
Been using this app for two years as a supplement to an on board gps chart plotter. In some cases the downloaded maps were more useful than the charts available in the on board devices (the carribean charts were excellent). Very easy to download map regions. Definitely the best deal for Android device. Only wish I could display vmg on display.
I have changed my phone and now have lost my charts( UK south west).have tried contacting via email but no reply...was a great app up until late now
Great for navigating around the harbour. Easy to use and provides accurate information
Just like looking at a NOAA chart. :-)
Can you load other NZ charts than just the ones already able to download?
It is enough for basic navigation, well done... it would be better if there is openseamap support and it would be nice if base world map was more detailed .
Bug on latest, at least with pixel. Download app, install charts, but app doesn't find them. Uninstall then reinstall and you will see at bottom it installs the charts.
We use it instead of our papers charts.
I would give it 5 stars if someone could tell me how to get a eta to me destination when on a route
Work great on ChromeOS Android 6.0 and my rooted Nexus 6 with Android 7.1.1!
Works well and I rely on it when sailing my small boat in the Solent, UK. Sadly support seems not to exist, I have twice emailed the designer for help with a problem but never reveived an acknowledgement. It is annoying to have to go on line to consult the user msnual which cannot be downloaded. Also to have to agtee to terms and conditions every time you start it up.
Great chartplotter! The clean design and general responsiveness of the interface make it a great chartplotter app. I can't wait to see some additional features, in particular NMEA (via WiFi) integration to get GPS data from the boat (saving battery on the phone/tablet) as well as AIS targets, water speed and wind indications. Thank you for all the good work !
Can't get Australian sea maps at all and I searched for Australian sea maps at this is what come up a bit miss leading would like a refund
Splendid app, saved me a lot of money and does me fine for all I need.
Made my own chart files for CDN Great Lakes and the caribbean.
Fantastic aid to navigation
Great
Marine chart plotters can fail but this is good backup.
Great app, worked well laying our buoys. Any idea when it's not showing the depth when I hit the question mark on a UK Chart for Irish sea?
My go to navigation app! Would be nice to be able to search active captain database. Also noted that latest update is much fetching and rendering chart tiles.
Florida's west coast is shallow! With this app I can explore the coast and bays with alot more confidence. It uses your phones locator so be aware of battery use.
Works great. I mounted a tablet and use it as I cruise. Tried other apps that were not as good.
You little beauty
Great app. Easy to use.
I have had this app for some time and it has been great but I just updated on my nexus 10 and the latest version has major problems. With the latest version my maps constantly rotate. This is very annoying. I suspect that it may be sensor drift but this never happened before. If I lay the nexus flat then the rotation slows down a lot but I need the nexus angled up so that I can see the screen. Also, all my marks now flash. It is as though the app is constantly writing the marks to the screen. This is also very annoying and gives me sore eyes. Hopefully a fix gets released soon.
Loved this app but all of a sudden I can't get lake Erie to load. I have uninstalled the app once and the chart multiple times but still no success.
Love the program. Simple, clean, accurate. Asked for Reverse Route option, Mr Kamp replied personally, and few days later, there it was! Loads quickly. Every US chart and then some.
Why is it every time theres an update do i have to download the charts all over again its really annoying
After a year, I can say that this app is excellent. Love the active captain integration. As a constant traveler on board, this is the only way I can post my comments to active captain.
I've used MX for awhile and it's great for casual navigation (I use it in Florida). But, it seems like I can't zoom out enough without losing the chart now. I understand that there has to be a limit to avoid trying to use the app with too little resolution. But, now on a phone I'm forced to only see a few hundred yards ahead while I'm traveling. Please let me zoom out further.
Saw a mentions of folks not getting support. I emailed Will with an issue (that turned out to be my fault) and he replied back (multiple times) within the hour. Although I've not had a chance to use it yet looks great from the maps. Make sure to Register for Active Captain to get the overlays. Thanks Will for your help!
I was told about this app 2 hours before we left port in Wrangell Alaska, heading for our home in Haines Alaska. We ended up running the narrows at night. All navigation was done with the phone with no problems. The next night we pulled into the harbor in Juneau without any problems. If we didn't have this our run would have taken a week or more because the weather window would have slammed shut on us. Don't leave port without it.
This app is great! I wish it had support for ais sentences. Need it today, with ais becoming more popular.
This is a great nav app, with the possibility to use UK admiralty charts for a small fee. The only gripe I have is that when the track has a spurious data point, due to a GPS error, there's no obvious way to edit the point out, so all the track stats are wrong.
Downloaded NOAA Region 8 maps and St Joseph's Bay maps are not showing up. Active Captain markers show up on a plain blue field all the way to max zoom. Cannot find a way to contact MX Mariner about the issue from their app or their website. Hopefully they read this and fix it.
Accurate, convenient, does a great job tiling and zooming seamlessly among the NOAA charts. I used this app for a 1 wk cruise of the PNW San Juan Islands in August 2013. It was easier than the RayMarine chart plotter -- quicker to pan and zoom. My first mate was so impressed he bought the app too. Best seven bucks i ever spent. Update Aug '15 - four more weeks of bare charter sailing trips haven't dimmed my admiration for Will Kamp and his app. Only wish it were available for iPhone so friends could get it.

I like this app for sailing but it needs an option to keep the display lit during navigation. Constantly having to wake up the device is a huge pain. Some better method of importing custom charts would be good as the US (no Canadian) charts are available. Easy and reasonably intuitive to drive. Update May 2016: Just was forced to the latest update. First impressions are very disappointing. No North up display, poor panning and zooming. Still no canadian data
