SoundTeeth: Audio Notes

SoundTeeth captures sound bites from live performances, allowing you to record the minute of audio before you pressed the record button. It is particularly well suited to taking notes in a lecture, presentation, etc. where only a full recording would be unnecessarily long and detailed.

When trying to take notes on a lecture via audio recording, it would be nice to be able to capture only the really important bits so that they can be reviewed efficiently later, without having to sift through minutes or hours of anecdotes and examples. Unfortunately, it's difficult to spot an important statement until after it's been said, so figuring out when to start recording a lecture highlight is no easy task. SoundTeeth allows you to press a button to record something that has already been said, meaning you can take a recorded note after you've heard something worth recording. If you have a SoundCloud account, you can then upload your recordings to SoundCloud from directly within the app.

INSTRUCTIONS:

To begin a recording session, open the SoundTeeth app and press the button labeled, "Listen Up!" The microphone image will change from gray to orange, indicating that SoundTeeth is ready to make a recording: it is "listening." The app will keep to phone "awake" as long as it's in listening mode, allowing you ready access to the "Record" buttons. To deactivate listening mode, simply press the same button (now labeled "Stop Listening!") again.

While the app is in listening mode, press any one of the six "Record" buttons to create a recording. Don't worry that the app doesn't change its interface when recording; SoundTeeth is handling the recording in the background, keeping the interface clear and obvious for you. Once you've pushed a "Record" button, SoundTeeth saves a recording (named after the color button you pushed) from a minute before you pressed the button. The recording will automatically continue until one minute after you pressed the button for a default recording time of two minutes; however, you can extend this recording length simply by pressing the same recording button again within one minute of the last press. You can record from some or all of the categories (colors) at the same time without the recordings interfering with one another. Remember, there is never a time you can't start recording; as long as the app was in listening mode, you can always capture the minute before and the minute after your button press, in any or all of six color-coded categories.

SoundTeeth saves its recordings to a folder named "SoundTeeth" on your phone's memory. You'll want to be mindful of this folder as sound files can fill up memory rapidly. You can fetch the files from this folder manually by navigating through your phone. However, it is much easier to upload the files to SoundCloud from directly within the app. To do this, simply press the "Upload to SoundCloud" button on the bottom of the app screen, then enter your login and password (for security reasons, these entries will never be stored). SoundTeeth will then upload your recordings to your SoundCloud account; keep in mind that various data charges may apply. Once each file is uploaded, SoundTeeth will clean out its local copy, freeing your phone's memory while allowing you to access your sound bites from anywhere.
