عاشوراء هو اليوم العاشر من شهر محرم في التقويم الهجري ويسمى عند المسلمين بيوم عاشوراء ويصادف اليوم الذي قتل فيه الحسين بن علي حفيد النبي محمد في معركة كربلاء لذلك يعتبره الشيعة يوم عزاء وحزن. كما وقعت العديد من الأحداث التاريخية الأخرى في نفس اليوم. وقد اختلف المسلمون حول صيام ذلك اليوم. ويعتبر يوم عاشوراء عطلة رسمية في بعض الدول مثل إيران، باكستان، لبنان، البحرين، الهند والعراق والجزائر. سبب الصيام عند أهل السنة هو أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رأى اليهود يصومونه حيث أن الله عز وجل نجا موسى والمؤمنين من فرعون فقال عليه السلام نحن أحق بموسى منهم . أخرج البخاري عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ _رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا_ قَال:َ "قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ _صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ_ الْمَدِينَةَ فَرَأَى الْيَهُودَ تَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَال:َ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: هَذَا يَوْمٌ صَالِحٌ هَذَا يَوْمٌ نَجَّى اللَّهُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنْ عَدُوِّهِمْ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى - زاد مسلم في روايته: "شكراً لله _تعالى_ فنحن نصومه"، وللبخاري في رواية أبي بشر "ونحن نصومه تعظيماً له"-. قَال:َ فَأَنَا أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى مِنْكُم.ْ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ" في رواية مسلم: "هذا يوم عظيم أنجى الله فيه موسى وقومه ، وغرَّق فرعون وقومه.
هذا اليوم له أهمية عند الشيعة ففي هذا اليوم حصل مقتل الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب وأهل بيته ظلما، بعد حِصَار دام ثلاثة ايام مٌنِعَ هو واهل بيته من الماء, في العاشر من محرم سنة 61 للهجرة من قبل جيش يزيد ابن معاوية. وللذكرى عند الشيعة عموما، والإثني عشرة خصوصا، شعائر مميزة يقومون بها طيلة الايام العشره الآوائل من محرم التي تعزز ايمانهم من خلال التفكر بالحدث المآسوي العظيم. ومن الشعائر التي يقومون بها الشيعة الاثني عشرية، في جميع أنحاء العالم وخاصة في كربلاء، هي زيارة ضريح الحسين وإضاءة الشموع وقراءة قصة الإمام الحسين والبكاء عند سماعها واللطم تعبيراً عن حزنهم على الواقعة.والاستماع إلى قصائد عن المأساة والمواعظ عن كيفية استشهاد الحسين وأهل بيته. ويهدف هذا لربطها مع معاناة الحسين والشهادة، والتضحيات التي قدمها للحفاظ على الإسلام على قيد الحياة. وفسر على نطاق واسع استشهاد الحسين من قبل الشيعة باعتباره رمزا للنضال ضد الظلم والطغيان والاضطهاد.وتوزيع الماء للتذكير بعطش الحسين في صحراء كربلاء واشعال النار للدلالة على حرارة الصحراء. ويقوم البعض بتمثيل الواقعة وماجرى بها من أحداث أدت إلى مقتل الحسين بن علي فيتم حمل السيوف والدروع. كما يقومون بتمثيل حادثة مقتل الحسين جماهيريا فيما يعرف بموكب الحسين. ويقوم البعض بالتطبير أي إسالة الدم مواساة للحسين. كما يقوم البعض بضرب انفسهم بالسلاسل
