Hyderabad is the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana and capital of Andhra Pradesh. Occupying 625 square kilometers (241 sq mi) along the banks of the Musi River. Hyderabad was historically known as a pearl and diamond trading center, and it continues to be known as the City of Pearls. Many of the city's traditional bazaars, including Laad Bazaar, Begum Bazaar and Sultan Bazaar, have remained open for centuries. The most commonly used forms of medium distance transport in Hyderabad include government owned services such as light railways and buses, as well as privately operated auto rickshaws, short distance transportation is provided by the ubiquitous cycle rickshaws. Bus services operate from the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station in the city center and carry over 130 million passengers daily across the entire network.
