About TeXPortal Free

TeXPortal is a TeX/LaTeX compiler app, converting your tex document sources to PDF via the familiar TeX toolchains. It also fixes common TeX problems automatically, automatically installs missing packages just like MiKTeX on Windows platform. For more information, please visit http://lameandroidhero.bitbucket.org/

On Android 4.4 and 5.0, there might be permission problems when compiling files in external SD card.

This free version only provides the most commonly used TeX command, namely pdfLaTeX. Check out our full version for Xe(La)TeX, Lua(La)TeX, ConTeXt, DVIPS, BibTeX, PS2PDF, etc.

Notes: For your safety, TeXPortal Free exits itself whenever it is interrupted (i.e. put to the background) such as when the screen rotates, you press the "Recent apps" button, switch to another app, etc. Therefore, please keep your screen on, lock screen rotation, do not plug in keyboard, etc. when compiling documents.

This app might download additional packages from the web. To save your data plan as well as for the best experience, run the app when you have a stable WIFI connection.

I have tried a couple of other LaTeX apps for android. This pleases me because it is local. I am buying the paid full version

X70%
by X####:

In Android Nougat 7.0 when installing the basic system it gives me an error: Cannot run program "busybox" (here showing some path) Error=13, Permission denied

Z70%
by Z####:

Update broke the menu. In order to use the app, my phone must be in landscape, otherwise no way to access menu.

T70%
by T####:

Uninstall after the latest update required inexplicable permissions to share all sorts of data from my device with some ad company. I've used this app since its infancy and am very disappointed that this version is now driven by ads.

J70%
by J####:

Words cannot do justice to how wonderful it is to be able to compile TeX on android without the kludge of doing it server-side. The program works without a hitch, and can handle all the TeX I've thrown at it. One warning: the first time you compile something, TeXPortal will have to download the necessary parts of TeX, so it will take a while. Also, it only downloads packages it needs.

Y70%
by Y####:

This seems to work great so far, though I miss bibtex support. The ads are pretty awful though. A paid version would be most welcome.

Y70%
by Y####:

WARNING: MALWARE This app DOES NOT produce PDFs from Latex. In fact it doesn't seem to do anything remotely useful at all. What it DOES do is advertise at you with banners and full screen ads.

Y70%
by Y####:

This makes compiling documents on the go much easier. Will there be an editor on top of this? I've been using another app to edit my documents, then have to open up the document on this app. It would be nice to be able to edit and then compile with the push of a button. The new interface in version 2.3 is neat to, and I like that it now compiles without asking what pdf viewer to use and instead leaves the compiled Pdf in the directory you're working in.

I used to love this app, but it's been bogged down with ads. Almost better without.

Two words, popup ads. I will not use it further.

The application is the only one that does a decent job in the offline regime. So far it managed to do all it was supposed to. It installs the missing packages unnoticeably fast! The only drawback is the lack of some basic functionality like searching the text, syncing with the output pdf file, jumping from the error in the log file to the corresponding spot in the text, better integration with Dropbox ( like not having to have a separate directory for the app), etc. Hopefully, the developer considers these basic needs in near-future versions. Then the app will definitely become irreplaceable.

Offline compilation!!! Amazing TeX compilation on the go!

Being able to compile off-line on Android is fantastic. Compiles even large projects without issues.

This is what I've been craving for months.. a local TeX compiler! Thank you so very very much!

Works perfectly on my tablet. Transforms the android platform for me - can now do serious work on the go. Superb.

Really increases the usefulness of my tablet for scientific work. Works like a charm on my Asus TF700. Ideas for new features: * Button to drop into text editor. An editor doesn't need to be integrated into TeXPortal, I think, but making it easier to switch to and from the editor of the user's choice would be great. If you do make an integrated editor, being able to jump from error to error would be great. * Need to be able to set some environment parameters, esp. default paper size. * No obvious way to look at output DVI file unless you're using one of the TeX variants that produces PDF. I only use the PDF variants, but it seems strange to offer plain TeX as an option if you can't view the output file. Thank you!!!

Every upgrade is making this more user friendly than the last. Compiles even complicated documents without effort. An absolute must have for any tablet owner that knows what LaTeX is.

Its simple but powerful, and with DroidEdit makes the perfect combo for editing TeX files... And works offline (previously downloading the packages you'll need for work)...

Oh, yes - this is it. Thank you so much. As a maths lecturer, compiling LaTeX documents is pretty much an everyday staple of my job. Finally, I can do everything I need on my Asus Transformer Prime.

I am trying to compile a document on Google Drive. It opens the doc but stops on failure to write the log file, the /write18 error. Do the file APIs or whatever not see Drive? Can I compile a large doc with many includes on Drive? This is on Samsung Note 2, having installed the Google Drive app. I click on the .tex file and it pops me into TexPortal, tantalizing--but then stops. I agree with the comment that this app is a "game changer". Samsung sells a docking stn for the Note 2 for use as a PC. Note 3 will be twice as powerful. If the app ecology is rich enough this can be my PC. LaTeX is a major step, bravo to the author.

Have been playing around with a 100 page document that uses many different packages, and all work really well, I haven't found anything wrong with it so far! Much faster than I thought it would be to compile, too. Very impressed, thank you!

Install the app, STAY ON THE INTERNET (!!!!!!!), and try to generate a dvi or pdf. Then it resolves the errors. After that it will work off line. :-)

Most of the user who wrote thinks like "Woooooooooot?" should first of all read the messages ;) Don't push "dismiss" ;) or go to manage and download the package manually ... It's really on the right way, their could be some gui improvements and local texmf support but TeX on android COOL! Thanks

Great, great, great!! It works flawlessly on my Nexus 7 ! E.g. the beamer-style presentations and articles (also with ams packages, revtex & tkiz) get compiled without problems and the results are, of course, identical to those obtained on standard LaTeX installations outside the Android world. That's awesome having a latex system on the go !

Just got a tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1) and had to look at getting LaTeX. This installed easily and ran beautifully on an old document. The required packages downloaded and everything ran like it is supposed to. Great piece of work! The author has restored the pdflatex capability that was missing in recent versions. So all isgood again. Many, many thanks.

I used to love this app, but now that the actual functionality has been removed, I'm s.o.l. Been using the free version for over a year... why have ads when the software isn't even useful? Very, very disappointing.

W70%
by W####:

I fully agree with Tabor Henderson. The free app was working great, but after the latest update the app got replaced with a demo version which has no functionality whatsoever and one has to go to the paid version to be able to actually do something; at least this is what one should believe since there is no way one can try out to produce a pdf file with some LaTex input first before buying the product. Note that LaTex is a tool used very frequently in scientific groups and on all platforms one can get an implementation for free because it is a non-profit product. Hopefully someone will take up the effort and provide (again) a free implementation.

The developer provides endless support. Thanks for this amazing port of LaTeX and for your helps. For those installing version 2.3.5.7.11, if you are facing a problem related to kpathsea, be sure that you are using "dropbox repository" on the settings and do not use CTAN version. You may uninstall and install a fresh version to get "kpathsea" from dropbox.
