천주교광주대교구

광주대교구 제5대 교구장이었던 현 하롤드 헨리(Harold Henry)
대주교(1954~1976 재임, 성 골롬반회 소속)가 당시 빈약했던 교구 재정을 구호하기 위해
미국 등 해외에서 모금활동을 펼쳤습니다.
이 같은 모금 활동으로 교구 내에 대신학교를 설립하고 성당 부지를 확보,
다수의 성당을 건립하는 등 많은 재정적인 힘을 얻게 되었습니다.
이 같은 재정적인 뒷받침에 힘입어 1983년에는 북동성당에 이어 광주대교구의 두 번째 주교좌 대성당이 된 임동
주교좌 성당을 봉헌하기에 이릅니다.
이 성당을 짓는데 큰 도움을 주었던 미국의 독지가 세례명이 ‘안셀모'였는데,
하롤드 헨리 대주교의 업적과 이 독지가를 기리고자
임동 대성당의 수호자를 성 안셀모로 정하였으며,
