From Joseon Dynasty era when the gisaeng system kicked into high gear, gisaengs became gwan gisaeng. Seoul gisaeng belonged to Jangagwon and local gisaeng belonged to the educational institute of gybing. They started to receive the training for hane ei, poem, calligraphic works, dancing, singing, etc. in addition to the basic gisaeng skills to entertain high ranked officers or confucian scholars when they were about 12 years old.
Therefore, gisaeng was classified into the first group, the second group and the third group depending on the cultural ability and singing and dancing skills. The first group belonged mainly to the royal family or the public offices to live a life of professional entertainers as singing and dancing at a national event or party.
