한국에서 미국으로 이민 온 우리 교포들은 민족의 유업을 이으며 조상 적부터 대대로 물려받은 역사적이며 전통적인 기독교 신앙을 지키려고 미전역에 걸쳐서 산발적으로 가주, 중부, 뉴욕, 필라델피아, 캐나다 등에서 몇몇 노회를 구성하고 있었습니다.
이 다섯 노회는 모두 같은 개혁주의 신앙을 가지고 있었습니다. 목사들은 대부분 한국에서 신학을 나왔으며 몇몇 분은 미국이나 캐나다에서 신학교육을 받은 분도 있었습니다. 우리 교포들과 한국교회가 전반적으로 건전하게 자라고 특히 장로교가 건전하게 자라서 후세 자손들에게 바른 성경적 교회관을 심어주려면 아무래도 개혁주의 신앙에 기초를 둔 청교도의 전통을 가져야겠다는 생각으로 뜻이 같은 다섯 노회의 목사들은 마음을 합하여 교리적으로 건전한 장로교 총회를 조직할 준비를 시작하게 되었습니다.
이 일을 위하여 필라델피아 노회에서 창립 모임을 주선하기로 하여1978년 2월 8일에 필라델피아에서 새로운 한인 장로교단이 탄생 되었습니다.

1978년 2월 8일 오후 3시30분 필라델피아에 있는 웨스트민스터 신학교 반틸관에서 미국전역과 캐나다에서 온 목회자 32명이 모여 교단 초대 총회장에 이 인재 목사를 선출했습니다.
그 후로 오늘에 이르러 본 총회는 23개 노회에 목사 회원이 1,000여명에 이르렀고, 500여 교회가 넘으며, 세례 교인 수 4만 6천여명으로 서반구에서는 가장 큰 한인 장로회 교단으로 성장하였고 북미주 장로교 및 개혁교단(NAPARC)의 정회원이기도 합니다. 교단 산하에는 8

개의 신학교가 있고, 많은 선교사들이 도미니카 공화국, 아르헨티나, 브라질, 칠레, 볼리비아, 에콰도르, 아이보리코스트, 독일, 중국, 일본, 몽골, 러시아, 필리핀 등에서 활발히 사역을 하고 있는 보수적인 교단입니다.
지난 2005년도 총회에서는‘세계로 선교부’를 독립적으로 신설하여 21세기 선교를 감당해 나가고 있습니다. 특히 총회 설립 30주년이 되어 지난 2월 11일 2008년도에 총회 설립 30주년 감사예배가 LA에서 있었습니다. 우리교회가 소속된 총회는 개혁주의의 신앙을 계승하여 주님의 복음을 증거하는 이 시대의 파수군의 역할을 감당하고 있습니다.
