The song has been composed in praise of the Lord, seeking to shower his Grace. The kavasam serves as a protective armour for devotees and confer great spiritual and material benefits when chanted daily with concentration and devotion.
The first four introductory lines of the song are known as "Kaappu", followed by a couple of meditational lines and the main song portion consisting of 238 lines are known as "Kavacham".
