لقد حدد الباحثون أربعة مراحل للاستجابة الجنسية لدى الرجال والنساء: الشهوة، أوج الإثارة، النشوة و الارتخاء.
المرحلة 1: الشهوة أو الإثارة

تشكل هذه الانقباضات جزءاً من النشوة، ويصل الرجل إلى نقطة لا يمكنه فيها منع القذف من الحدوث. فتؤدي التقلصات في غدة البروستات وعضلات قاع الحوض إلى القذف، عندما يُدفع السائل المنوي من القضيب.
المرحلة 4: الارتخاء
يكون الرجل الآن في مرحلة النقاهه، عندما يعود القضيب والخصيتين إلى حجمها الطبيعي، يتنفس بصعوبة وسرعة، ينبض قلبه بسرعة، كما أنه قد يتعرق.
يوجد هناك فترة من الزمن بعد القذف يكون الوصول خلالها إلى نشوة أخرى أمراُ غير ممكن الحدوث. يتفاوت ذلك بين الرجال، من بضع دقائق إلى بضع ساعات أو حتى أيام. يصبح الوقت أطول عموماً كلما تقدم الرجل في السن.
