Seu nome científico significa: do (grego) ikterus = amarelo; e do (tupi) jamacaí = pássaro que come lagartas. - Pássaro amarelo que come lagartas.

Características

Mede entre 23 e 26 centímetros de comprimento. O macho tem peso médio de 67,3 gramas e a fêmea tem peso médio 58,5 gramas.
Coloração geral alaranjada e preta. Apresenta capuz preto. Dorso e asas pretas. As asas apresentam visível mancha branca nas rêmiges secundárias. Cauda preta. Pescoço com colar de coloração laranja. Porção inferior do peito, ventre e crisso com coloração laranja intensa. A face não apresenta pele azulada característica de outras espécies do gênero Icterus. Os olhos são claros e o bico é forte, pontudo e apresenta a base da mandíbula na coloração azulada. Tarsos e pés de coloração cinza.
