白門書房

中央大学を象徴して「白門(はくもん)」ということがあります。
明治維新の余韻が残る1 8 8 5(明治1 8)年、1 8 人の若き法律家たちが「實地應用ノ素ヲ養フ」ことを旗印に、中央大学の前身である英吉利律学校を創設しました。
彼らは、当時国内で主流だったフランス法ではなく、実社会と密接に結びついた英米法を学ぶことこそが、我が国の司法制度の確立と近代化を達成するために役立つと考え、英吉利法律学校での教育を通じて近代社会にふさわしい人材を育成しようとしたのです。
新進気鋭の講師たちによる熱心な講義、実学を重んじた教育を特色とする本学には、将来法律家として社会の正義・公正を実現しようという高い志をもった青年たちが数多く集い、研鑽しあい、学窓を巣立っていきました。
卒業生の中には私学出身者として初めて法学博士となり、のちに「花の弁論」と謳われた弁護士の花井卓蔵や、1945(昭和20)年、戦争が激しさを増す中、身命を賭して翼賛選挙無効判決を下した大審院判事吉田久、また戦前戦後を通じ一貫して国家主義を批判し自由主義思想に基づいて言論活動を続けた長谷川如是閑など、優れた見識のある法曹家やジャーナリストとして歴史にその名をとどめた者も少なくありません。
「實地應用ノ素ヲ養フ」という本学独自の建学の精神、学問に対する真摯な態度、それらが、「白」色のもつ「正義」「潔白」「純粋」「真実」というイメージと重なり合い、また1 9 2 6(昭和元)年に完成した駿河台校舎の壁面中央部は、「中央」の2 文字をあしらったデザインともいわれ、それも相俟って昭和初期に「白門」という呼称が誕生したと考えられています。
かつて英吉利法律学校として出発した本学は、現在6 学部、大学院7研究科、専門職大学院3 研究科のほか、9 研究所、4 附属高等学校、2中学校を擁する総合学園へと発展しています。
1 2 5 年の歴史の中で培われてきた批判精神を忘れない在野での自由な学風は、「白門」ということばとともに今も中央大学の中に確かに息づいています。
