About Terminal Emulator for Android

Access your Android's built-in Linux command line shell. Unleash your inner geek!

This is a new version of the popular "Android Terminal Emulator" application. Same great program, just with a new name.

Top Features

+ Full Linux terminal emulation.
+ Multiple windows.
+ Launcher short cuts.
+ UTF-8 text. (Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, etc.)
+ Completely free. No ads, no in-app-purchases, no nag screens, nothing.

Quick FAQ:

+ If you are having trouble entering text, try installing the free "Hacker's Keyboard IME". (Especially if you have a Samsung or HTC device.)
+ This app isn't a game emulator.
+ This app won't help you root your phone or change your phone's IMEI.
+ You need to know (or be willing to learn) how to use the Linux command line to use this app.
+ You may want to install a set of command line utilities like "Busy Box" or "Debian chroot" in order to add commands beyond the commands that come built into your Android device.
+ If you get a -505 error when trying to install this app under Android 5.0, it means that some other app is using the same permissions. You will have to uninstall the other app in order to install Terminal Emulator for Android. (People tell me that "jrummy's Toolbox Pro" causes this problem.)

Having been a Linux user and supporting this developer for a long long time, this app makes it all happen to anyone who wants that same experience as they did when Linux was first introduced. Android IS an OS based on the Linux Kernel and Jack has brought full functionality of it on your Android device. P.S. I suggest root users to install Busybox to get more than what they bargained for. Trust me it's worth it.

Its a great tool and all but you will have to be familiar with both the Windows CLI and the Linux Shell. Even with that it doesnt have all the commands you want and directorys/files arnt color coded. Im certified network and OS specialist if u needed to know if this was valided from a source with experiance.

The special key sequences don't work. But what I found interesting is when you click on Special Keys, why doesn't it simply allow you to click on a hyperlink for the VolUp+E for example. That way if they key combination sequence doesn't work for whatever reason, you can still select it from a menu? (I have a Pixel XL running 7.1.2)

I am semi fluent in Linux command line so that is not my problem, I am trying to run a shell script that needs to be run without having to keep the app directly open. When I switch tab for even a second it says "Killed", and I haven't seen any options to avoid that. Anyone know how to fix this?

Z70%
by Z####:

Ctrl+c or Tab are not sent using Vol up/down shortcuts. Android 6.0.1, MiUI 8.5.3. The shortcuts do take over the volume functions but just don't send commands. Downloaded Termux and they work fine there, but it has no Tabs :(

This app has allowed me to discover much about the inner workings of Android devices. I have the advantage that I have Linux experience. Not all devices are made alike. Success will depend on the device. This app is best had with Hacker's keyboard. Linux commands are created by making a symbolic (soft) links to busybox or toolbox. This however requires ROOT. The filesystem on the user's "sdcard" does not support symbolic links. Without root the user is limited to the Linux commands that the manfacturer put in. Use the cp command to copy some files from internal memory to the sdcard. Use df to find block devices (drives) . Type the word "busybox" and read how Android uses one file to implement numerous commands. On many devices "toolbox", is used in place of busybox. This app may need work on the higher versions of Android.

This app has been the best terminal emulator since I have started using it a few years ago and nothing changed to be honest. The only missing thing is a STOP or EXIT button in the expandable notification that would let user to exit emulator running in background without entering the actual app. Hope developer is reading comments and will implement this functionality.

I have used this app for many years. I noticed a while ago that the control modifier (volume down) no longer worked. I tried making it volume up but that didn't work either. Sad because I really like this app but it's worthless if I can't send ctrl-c commands. I uninstalled Terminal Emulator and tried Termux. Termux seems to work better and the modifier keys all work.

S70%
by S####:

Edit: Reduced a star because of poor copy paste functionality. See termux. It's copy paste is excellent. We need drag handles for copying. Older review : Works great, free, open source too. What more you want?

P70%
by P####:

The only shortage of this app was the terminal report itself as a password field, and the input method will change to password mode. And the google IME in password mode may ignore terminal controlling code(like ctrl-c it will only recognize to character "c")

D70%
by D####:

Tried changing WiFi address, end number of times. But every time it simply says that "No such device". Please fix it if possible. I'm using Moto G2. Hope to get a reply.

This is a Linux Terminal It is as close to root as possible without being root. Many of the system partitions are available for read. but not write. To see if you have busybox type "busybox" and click ENTER. If you have busybox a lengthy text description will appear which can be copied to the clipboard, pasted into a text editor and saved as a text file. The Linux commands the manufacturer has built in are available to the command line. They are usually created with a symbolic link to busybox or toolbox.

This is an excellent terminal environment for Android/Linux users who need to tinker around on their devices in ways not otherwise afforded by stock apps and settings. I've used it for as long as I've used Android devices and have never had a single complaint. Would be nice to see its creator release more software!

Z70%
by Z####:

Well, i got it to work on my kindle fire. Now im trying to figure out how to set its shell to kbox3

Z70%
by Z####:

The app is good but buggy at points. It sometimes doesn't load and will keep crashing until I delete and reinstall. Even then it still crashes. Please fix.

Z70%
by Z####:

I see some complaints for this but it works just fine. Top, ls, cd, exit . . .Volume down + c will kill the running command just like it always does (Ctrl + C).

B70%
by B####:

This goes to the heart of Linux. If you HAVE root you can add commands with symbolic links to busybox or toolbox. Simply make a symbolic link the busybox or toolbox binary and give it the name of the command you want to add. If you do not have root you can type busybox command name [ args ] and if busybox is present and has the command defined you can run it without root provided root is not needed to run the command. The toolbox binary also works this way.

Ive tried others, and have to keep. coming back to this one. Could use a few extra tweaks (screen/tmux integration via swipes), but it can emulate cntrl-C and Tab and I can hit Esc. Those are mandatory.!

Very useful. Although, I think the language is difficult but I guess it's irrelevant. It's just really hard to write on tiny touch-screen (just to show reality) but at least it can be used to fix files anywhere. To me, it's fine as it is; I like it lightweight.

U70%
by U####:

The app is very well built, for all such other apps are too buggy. I believe that its been through several development updates if not then great application.

U70%
by U####:

It's come in handy for running simple commands but where it really shines, at least for me, are the key shortcuts and ability to set commands to execute immediately the terminal is started. I set "su" then "pkill mediaserver" since it quickly frees the mediaserver when trying to catch a moment on photo but camera can't because something else is engaging the server. It's all done so fast since I keep its icon in my notification bar (along a few others).

J70%
by J####:

The app is clean. No requirements for unnecessary permissions. I used it to delete some large unwanted files using disk space. What a pal Sally!

T70%
by T####:

Tiny in size and it works in different mods. All of a linux pc in palm of my hand. But why I can't use 'man' command? Though it's not necessary...

U70%
by U####:

The hotkeys don't make sense and it glitched out when I tried to download something using curl.

U70%
by U####:

Keyboard keeps on capitalising characters each time. Back key of keyboard is disabled. That means you cannot edit typing mistake

U70%
by U####:

An essential bit of kit for when nothing but a nuts-and-bolts tty will do. Clever mapping of key modifiers to the hardware buttons makes the interface surprisingly practical in everyday use. I wouldn't want to use it for an extended shell session, but for those moments when you need quick access to the prompt, this (in combination with the Hacker's Keyboard) comes highly recommended.

U70%
by U####:

The app is perfectly fine. I have had it for 5 minutes and am satisfied. But as a true developer, the words "Unleash your inner geek" is slightly insulting. Please change that. Another thing, a couple of commands that ARE in other Linux computers like Debian are missing like nano from Android. I believe you should add an alias for it because people will think that you did not "make" things like that

U70%
by U####:

Had it on an old phone running android 2.2.1, very handy for uninstalling bloatware and other messy stuff. Only problem was that I kept mistyping (not the app's fault though)

U70%

I needed to install Linux on my phone which depends on terminal emulator. For some reason the won't install on my device(x86 arch problem?) So I couldn't do what I wanted

Almost all possible Linux commands with busybox. In my old JB version there was no option to add user but by pm command I was able to do that.

A soft ui based toggle alternative to the hardware keys would be preferable as they are awkward to use other than that this is reliable and I enjoy using it. Thanks.

Terminal emulator is not letting me select my option in a window where it asks me for yes press 1 and for no press 2.the keyboard shows the popups on taping but nothing gets typed... I have also tried with multiple keyboards including an external one.. Results are the same.. Please help me

U70%

But how do you use it, is there a man page anywhere? I use debian based Linux OS' a lot, but have no idea how to use this.

U70%

Better documentation might help -- or it might not. All I know is that few of the commands I need are installed and I have no clue how to get them installed. About to uninstall this app.
