In questo luogo in cui il cielo si dispiega sulla storia e ne protegge il respiro lento accade qualcosa che bisogna vedere. I Romani hanno sconfitto i Sanniti ma non hanno annientato la loro civile fierezza. La forza del buon senso fa dei Sanniti, guerrieri leali e difensori della terra buona del Molise, un popolo degno di rispetto. La loro resa non fu vera sconfitta ed è ancora una medaglia al senso profondo dell’appartenenza alla natura, ai luoghi che fanno degli uomini ‘popolo’. E si torna qui per comprendere quanto fosse coraggiosa la battaglia dei Sanniti per difendere la bellezza del cielo e della terra di Sepino. Perché comincia qui la storia spietata della modernità costruita con la forza. E pur nello schiaffo che la storia umana subisce sempre dai cambiamenti i Romani portarono a Saepinum la scienza e il genio di una conoscenza che li ha resi immortali

Tutta la storia del Molise si sviluppa sui percorsi della transumanza. Costante l’attività migratoria dei pastori sanniti verso l’Apulia e la dimostrata influenza campana. Importanti anche le suggestioni etrusche e greche riscontrabili mediante lo studio delle monete. Il territorio sannita era abitato dai Caraceni, che vivevano nell’alta valle del Sangro, dai Pentri che occupavano la parte orientale delle pendici del Matese e dai Frentani sulla costa adriatica. Queste comunità sono arrivate nel Sannio attraverso migrazioni che hanno una matrice comune: la presenza allegorica di un toro che li ha condotti in quei luoghi. In una commistione di storiografia e leggenda ricorre spesso il riferimento alla Primavera sacra, ai tori, ai buoi, ai cavalli e alle greggi. Simbologia che rimane nelle Carresi del Basso Molise. Le città di Larinum, Terventum, Bovianum, Venafrum, Saepinum conquistarono un ruolo strategico per la vicinanza alle grandi vie di comunicazione verso Roma. Pur inglobato dall’egemonia romana il Sannio preservò l’identità culturale. Sepino è la dolce grande bellezza della civiltà che produce latte e pane e grano, resistente alla foga della conquista senza conoscenza. Conserva tutta la forza evocativa dell’intelligenza umana che costruisce eternità.
