Le case antiche di Montagano sono di pietra calcarea, bianca e intagliata dal tempo, come la storia di questi luoghi. L'unico documento che attesta l'origine del paese è la "Pergamena Montaganese" risalente al XI secolo, che ne riporta i confini. Il nome deriverebbe dal Monte Ogeanum, o forse da Montis Aganis, in greco 'monte bello'. In seguito si avvicendarono diverse famiglie nel controllo del feudo sino all'eversione della feudalità. La Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta e la Chiesa di Sant'Antonio di Padova sono gli edifici di culto nel centro abitato, dove troviamo anche il Palazzo marchesale. L'antica residenza dei signori di Montagano fu il Castello di Collerotondo, di origine normanna, conosciuto con il nome di Casale. A pochi chilometri dal paese la Chiesa di Santa Maria in Faifoli, ritenuta una delle dodici chiese importanti del ducato di Benevento, è un luogo suggestivo in cui arrivare dopo aver percorso sentieri profumati di natura indisturbata. La presenza umana nell'antica Fagifulae (l'attuale Montagano), individuata in località S. Maria a Faifoli, è documentata da una citazione di Livio (XXIV, 20, 5) che narra delle vicende della seconda guerra punica nell'anno 214 a.C. dopo la sconfitta romana di Canne; la cita anche Plinio (Naturalis Historia, III, 12, 107) come municipio romano. Santa Maria a Faifoli ha una grande importanza anche perchè vi fece la sua professione di fede frate Pietro Angelerio, che diventerà papa Celestino V.
